Swingarm assembly (slop)...
« on: September 16, 2007, 09:27:25 AM »
I recently noticed that when I applied the rear brake on my '75 750, the rear tire would move to the right. The bike always felt a little shifty to drive since I can remember, but I ass-u-me-d that the older bikes just rode like that.  ??? After a little inspection and a look at the exploded view diagram of the swingarm assembly I figured out why my rear end was sloppy. As most of the posts I searched suggested the first thing I planned to check were the bushings. This was not the case. It turns out I had mistakenly installed the swingarm incorrectly. What I had done was mistook the end cap/dust seals (11) for washers. Instead of installing them on the end of the swingarm, I put them between the frame and the blot/nut. By doing this, the swingarm had roughly 1/4" side to side travel...  :o Now that it's installed correctly, the bike rides true and slop free. I am now confident in my cornering.

So in conclusion, be sure to double check the diagrams before final assembly!  ;D

Thanks,

Chris

Yep, done that ::)

I've had a big sign on my various office walls for the past 10+ years saying "Assumption is the Mother of all F*ck-Ups!"

It's never stopped me making them though :-\
