Those cheap forged aluminum rods?
« on: March 16, 2026, 08:38:14 AM »
I'm just curious, has anyone ever used those square looking aluminum 750 rods? They appear to have plenty of material, and are advertised as made in Japan. I'd guess the question would be machining tolerance and material suitability.
Surely someone has tried a set, they were reportedly made by M-C supply co. I can't help but wonder if they are a decent rod but the price makes them scary. The $50 price places them right there with used stockers.

Before we go through all of the theory, I searched and read the other posts about them, and those threads devolve into opinions. I have MTC steel, new and old MTC aluminum rods as well as a set of new Carrillos, so I won't buy any but can't help my curiousity.
Surely someone grabbed a set and tried them, but I've never heard about it. One of the old threads said CycleX used them for a while, but I never asked Ken.

I think you need to vandalize the sleeves for the thick alu rods.
The guy (sohc member) that restored a CB750 on Youtube with many episodes used a set of alu rods.

What happens when warm? Will they extend and increase compression?

I've owned a new set of those rods for over 30 years. New, unused and still in the original purchase box. I thought i was getting a great deal on some good hi po rods. Research told me to be cautious about using them because a lot of prep work needed to be done to insure the bearings didn't spin inside tge big end. I'm still waiting for a good report on their usefulness.

There was usually a pin in the rod cap to help hold the bearing half in place.....Golden Rods had this as well as the MTC aluminum rods. I had to drill the bearings on RC Engineering triple when I built those engines. I still have the steel cap template.....somewhere.😆

Don - these?  The seller is down here in TX.

Yes, those are the Rods I'm wondering about. I saw a set years ago and was afraid of their low "even back then" price.  It appears most guys are as cautious as I am, they might work but then, we know that stockers will work.

Finding out where, when, and how they do not work would ruin a guys day. Steve Morris bought a set of billet rods for a 3500hp V8 from a guy who assured him they were good enough for 70psi of boost, the first run at like 50psi all 8 of them totally came apart into pieces mostly the side of a half dollar. The damage overall was less than the worst possible outcome, the crank survived, the block was able to be repaired.

Unfortunately I won't get a chance to test these aluminum MTC rods and stroker crank. Another victim of the shop fire. I may need to revisit those ebay aluminum rods after all.

A blast furnace!
A "little" bit hotter than a BBQ.

This reminds me to invest in a  fire extinguisher with powder. Aim and shoot.  I have said that for years.
Need 2,  inside my garage and outside.
My garage is part of the house. Fire alarm will go off.
There is lots of flammable stuff.  Probably more than 50L oil, gasoline, paint, cleaner rattle cans etc.
3 bikes and fresh parts.
