Hi Everyone,

It's that time of year again, tire season.  I'm interested in feedback from those cb750 riders who have Metzeler Lasertec tires or Pirelli Sport Demon tires.  Pros/Cons, good/bad, any and all feedback is welcome.  Right now my bike has the stock rims on it.

Thanks again!

If you can get the original OEM sizes, go w/ Metzelers, can't buy a better tire. Do not experiment w/ non-original diameters/profiles/widths, you will probably not like the results. And make sure they are tube type, some tubeless tires cannot run tubes.
Continentals an excellent all-around choice and available stock sizes 4.00-18, 3.25-19

I've been emailing a guy by the name of Vaughn at American Moto Tire and he recommended the Metz Lasertec's.  This guy has been great in answering my questions, and I wanted to ask you folks about the tires so I can opinions that aren't fueled by a sale.  Thanks for the feedback.

Bridgestone BT45's

I can't comment on either but I put Bridgeston BT45's on my bike last year.  Tires handle awsome and stick to the road.  They have truely changed the feel of the 550.  Prior to that I had cheap ChengShins on it.  BT45's are a modern tread tire in our vintage sizes.

Sweet!  Thanks Chris, I was looking at those a couple of months back and forgot about them.  I'm in the process of moving, so my head is full of non-motorcycle related stuff.  Hmm, this is GOOD news!

I have lasertech's on mine and while I dont ride THAT fast, I do ride pretty quick at times and I have been very pleased with them. My old ones were ancient so I can't really make any comparisons there but the metzlerrs have so far been a damn nice pair of tires. Hard wearing to

When I bought the bike it had Cheng Shin's on it and while it was not running at that point I couldn't vouch for their effectiveness.  I'm not looking to AHRMA racing, but I'm making suspension/brake/engine modifications to make perform a little better, so a set of tires that instill confidence while I'm riding quick or going through the curves at a "rapid" rate will be a Very Good Thing.

I just put the Bridgestones on my bike (CB750K2) and so far like them....good feel to them and handle well. Stock sizes and cheaper than Metz (rear was $90 for the BT-45).
Ive had ME33 and ME55 lasers before and they are also very good but do wear quicker than my Dunlop GT501s.

cheers
Andy

I've got Metzeler Lasertecs on our CB550 and they seem pretty good. The compound is on the softer side.

I second the Bridgestones.  I'm running a 130-80-18 on the rear and a 100-90-19 on the front.  Although I'm not quite comfortable knee-dragging the bike, I've gotten the bike pretty low with no problem.  I can't comment on the tread wear or wet weather performance, they do seem to be on the softer compound side with plenty of channels for rain.  The Dunlops that I have on my other K6 are more of a cruising tire designed more for mileage. Being that the BT45's are softer, they bite in when braking as well.  The Dunlops and other tires I've had like to lock the brakes up earlier causing slight skidding.

I would recommend the BT45's, (also know as Battalax's).

I've got a Metzeler ME22 on the front of my 400F and a Metzeler ME77 on the rear.  WAAAAAY wider than stock, but they do OK.  When time comes to replace, I'm thinking of the Avon Roadrunner, which come narrow enough for the old bikes.  It's a tubeless design, but American Moto Tire recommended it for the narrow rims we have, and it will accept tubes.  Mounted a set on the GF's 360, which runs the same size tires as the 400F and am VERY impressed with them.

For the 750, I don't think you can beat the Dunlop K81/TT100.

I assume you have to run tubes with those - where's a good place to pick up a new set from?

I would recommend Kenda Challenger K657 tires. Very sticky!!! Yet to see how long they wear. But very Sticky :o

Sorry to change the subject, but does cross drilling rotors really help braking power and fade, paulages?

I really like that dual setup you have there with the polished calipers. :o :o

Thanks

can't really say for sure whether the cross drill helps or not, but it seems sensible that having a way for spent brake material to vent away from the disk would help. having two disks? helps incredibly.

Here is a pic of the Lazer front tire on my 750F.  The tire has 15,000 miles on it.  The wear bars aren't quite showing yet, and it has worn evenly.  I run 38 psi in it.  According to my records, this is the fifth one I have had on the bike.  I have No. 6 ready to go on soon.

Wow; thanks for all the responses so far.  I'm not sure which tire I'm going to go with yet, but all the feedback so far has been immensely helpful.  As an aside, I am also in the process of completing the dual disc setup, and have gotten my rotors cross drilled by ElCheapo (good man and did a great job on my rotors-highly recommended).  I was leaning towards the Pirelli Sport Demons, but the guy at American Moto Tire was really selling the Metz Lasertec's.  Then the Battleax's were recommended too.  Hmm, still deciding...
