Valve adjusted wrong
« on: April 18, 2007, 09:23:06 AM »
I have not had a chance to crack open my head to see but I am wondering if I did damage.  I ran my engine without checking my valves for like 100 miles.  It was making this loud ping on one side.  A friend said it was an exaust leak.  Well I adjusted my valves and it went away.  Most of the valves were not loose.  They were very tight.  Just one note to anybody who adjusts valves, make sure 2 shims are not stuck together. But anyways, could there be damage done to the valve from that loud ping noise?

Valves are not supposed to be tight. There's supposed to be clearance between the valve tip and the rocker, if there's no clearance you risk not letting them fully seat. I can't tell if there was damage to your valves, but indeed if the valves were not closing or seating properly you could burn them or the seats. Not because of the ping from a loose rocker but because of a tight one.

2 shims (feeler gauges) stuck together would make the valve adustment loose, and loud. (unless you are leaving in the shims for a non-SOHC4)

If you are worried about valve damage, do a compression check.

I found out the 2 shims were stuck together at the end of the whole process.  I just had to go back and redo them all again but it is a really stupid mistake to make.

I need to get a compression checker,  bought one off of ebay and it did not fit in my head,  I went to the the 2 honda dealers in philly and the tech guys had no clue about an adaptor for compressions checkers.  The honda dealers around Philly are the worst in the world.  Anybody have a link to where i can get the thing ready to go for my 550.

Sears.com has them for about $40 bucks with all the adapters you could need. Or you could be cheap like me and make an adapter from an old spark plug...break out the ceramic and tap out the center to fit. ;)

If you do go the adapter route, you need one with a 12mm thread.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.
