cable routing CB750
« on: April 18, 2007, 09:35:13 AM »
Does anyone have or can point me to photos of the routing for the clutch and throttle cables?  I switched to drag bars and clutch is stiff, throttle doesn't snap back anymore etc.  The cables worked OK before and I've tried several different configurations but I just can't seem to get it right.  I don't have any really tight bends, but still no luck.  The clutch is not a big deal but the throttle cable thing is a problem.

Thanks
Don

Your best bet is to get shorter cables to compensate for the shorter bars.

I can shorten the cables no problem, but I think it's the routing under the gas tank that I'm doing wrong.

When I swapped in my drag bar I had hella problems too.  In fact I bent the clutch cable so bad I could barely move it.  So, I ordered all new cables.  I used Suzuki GS500 cables for the throttle and they are the perfect length.  I bought an aftermarket clutch cable from bikebandit and just routed it until it didn't bind when I turned the handle bars.

I am also interested in this questions as Ive run into a similar problem with my K4 rebuild. Questions is should the wiring harness go through the triangle space (under the top down tube) and OVER the coils or ALONG side of the coils. If ALONG side of the coils then the BOTH throttle cables have enough room to go OVER the coils, through the triangle space and attach to the carbs. Anyone got pics of a working situation? My difficulty may be I have CB900 coils which are a little bigger I think than stock.....

cheers
Andy

I've always routed the pull cable over to the left side of the neck, then ran it along the backbone above the coils and then to the carb, don't pass it through the triangle, if you do that it makes two sort of sharp bends and is too stiff.
the othewr cable (close) I run on the other side of the neck, and then through the triangls, it doesn't seem to bind that way.

Mine had automatic cruise control when I bought it, pull your hand off and it stayed there.

On the clutch, I run behind the headlight bucket, ziptied to the frame between 3 and 4, then down to the clutch
when I first got it, it was through the speedo loop, and felt real stiff, not going through the loop loosened it up enough to be comfortable.

tried shorter cables, and for some reason couldn't get them to work right.

Took this photo before disassembly, Throttle cables under coils, harness over coils. I'm battling with the harness now, to get the harness under the gas tank bushing so the tank will go on smoothly.

One throttle cable over coils through the triangle goes to the lower throttle return connection making gradual curves. The other cable under coils goes straight back to the throttle pull connection.

Thanks for the help guys, it gives me something to go on.  Mine is a K4 as well.

I thought about shorter cables but I figured it must be something else, as the cables actually bend less sharply now than they did before.  Most annoying part is the bike looked like absolute hell and had sat for years before I started the rebuild but all this stuff worked fine and now after a zillion hours of cleanup and repairs this silly crap is keeping me tied up.

Thanks
Don
