Me and the wife are trying to plan a trip to Oktoberfest in Munich next year.  Has anyone ever gone and if so what is the best time to go and where is the best place to stay?

I was in Oktoberfest in 2005. I was lucky enough than one of the training courses I had to attend was held during that time; it's very hard to find accomodation, and if you do, price is double than normal.

Any hotel in Munich will do; Munich is very safe and public transportations works well. Oktoberfest is held in a big area -Train stop "Theresienwiese" if memory serves me- What will you find in there? Fairground attractions, street kiosks, and huge tents sponsored by the main beer manufacturers, that work as restaurants. I entered in a few of them to feel the ambiance, but I was alone, I didn't stay. I don't drink much alcohol so I didn't find appalling to sip 1/4 gallon beer either. On the street kiosks you could eat roasted chicken or pork sandwichs, the ubiquitous sausages etc.

Oktoberfest is a curious thing to witness, but in my opinion it is not worth a trip just to see it -but I'm not a big beer drinker anyway-. Nevertheless, Munich is worth a visit. I've been there six or seven times and know it pretty well. It's small enough to see it in two or three days. Don't miss the BMW museum, and of course, the city key monuments. There is a curious museum devoted to Karl Valentin, a german comedian from the thirties or so. He was very ironic, and the museum has inherited his personal traits. It opens (i.e) at 09:43 and closes at lunchtime at (i.e) 12:38, admission costs 1.23 etc.

What I liked more of the Oktoberfest fairground was the Wall of Death that I posted here....

I've never needed a festival in a foreign country as an excuse to get #$%*faced on beer...

But it could be fun :)

Very true, it starts in September.

As I said, the beer tents are something cool to see, but in my opinion, not worth a trip for that alone.

BTW, I remember my backpack was inspected before entring the fairground, and they asked me what was those zip ties I had in my backpack for. With my lousy german I explained I was engineer and always carry a bunch of them because you never know what would they be useful for. He insisted in what did I wanted them for, so I told him "so what?, what do you care? Am I really dangerous with them?" or the like, so he stopped buggering me. Then, when getting out of a tent, I was asked again to open my backpack. I asked "why?, shouldn't you check backpacks before we enter?" The guy told me the reason was to avoid people stealing tankards, that were very expensive.

I was in Munich back in '74.  Not for Oktoberfest (Easter-time) but then again I was a kid.  Amongst other things, we visited the Dachau Concentration Camp.  Very, very chilling.  To this day, I have vivid memories of the place - quite the lesson in life for a 10 year old.  Extremely sobering place, but worth the trip.  We followed up with a stop at the Olympic Village.  It was only 2 years removed from the hostage crisis, but not really promoted, so it was a nice lift after Dachau.  The potential for the stupidity of the human race seems to never end.

Boy, this is a depressing post.  :-\

I have not been to Munich for Oktoberfest, but my brother-in-law has; pretty fun, lots to eat, dancing/drinking and quite the celebratory atmosphere.  I belong to 2 German/Austrian dancing clubs in Milwaukee, WI and the German dance functions are really enjoyable.  I met my wife at Germanfest (http://www.germanfest.com/) and since there are multiple German clubs in and around the Milwaukee area it is much like an extended family-multigenerational and typically easygoing with some usual German stubbornness mixed.  Anyhow, one of the groups I belong to is Muller Fasching Verein, a club that dances only during the Karnival season.  Here's the link:  (http://www.muller-fasching.org/).  Lots of fun, and I do hope to get to Munich soon.

Prost! :)
