There's actually a lineman hall of fame and everything.

Their pay is exorbitant, until you think about the fact that one false nick from a treebranch and BAM!  You're burnt toast.

Brings to mind a couple things. I just watched a segment of a show about hazardous jobs. This one was for repairing radio transmission towers. The guy had to climb a 1,275 ft. tower which took him almost 4 hours.. just to get up there.

While in college I was pretty lucky to land a summer job as a wire lather (we lashed the steel together before it was buried in concrete). For four summers I worked on various new buildings going up in lower Manhatten. I was making $5.75/hr. and $11.50/hr. for overtime of which there was a great deal of. That was back in the mid-sixties. We worked on, typically, buildings up to about 30 stories. I never thought twice about walking around the edges of plywood forms up there. Now you can't get me on the roof of my own house. ;D
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Ohm-y god, when will it end? If this carries on there will be a battery of charges against us as the biggest bunch of live wires out there.

That pilot is amazing. To hover his ship that close to those wires with his rotor overlapping them and hold it there is amazing. You cannot imagine how dangerous that is and how much skill goes into that.  On my best and craziest day I would have decline that opportunity.

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?

I interviewed for a job as the helicopter mechanic with a company who does this.  There is some good information on their website, http://www.haverfield.com/services_comp.html
A photo of them cleaning insulators.
