Hi all,
You would think I would know by now how to do this, but this is a new problem Ive encountered and so tapping the collective wisdom of the forum. I NEED HELP!

The problem - I install my K4 carbs and they seem to sit higher and maybe even leaning up at a slight angle so that when i try and out the airbox on its a real squeeze (and a real pain!!) to get the airbox rubbers on the carbs and then the two screws holding the airbox.  Once this is complete the throttle response is sticky (dosent return - have new cable) suggesting that carbs are too high and hitting top frame or harness or breather...

Whats new? - airbox-carb rubbers. Engine - carb rubbers. All new clamps. (on my K2 Ive had carbs on/off so many times in last few weeks and its sooooo easy - whats going on here???).

Ive always wondered this but is there a "correct" orientation for the engine-carb rubbers. I do have them all on correct ports 1-4, with #1, #2, #3, #4 all facing up and inline with carb ports. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG!!??? Driving me crazy as you all know its a pain getting those carbs on!!

Things I thought Id try....putting engine rubbers on carbs first and then install carbs-rubbers on engine side. Would this help?

Has anyone encountered this problem before????? AND HOW DID YOU SOLVE IT??? This is all thats stopping me riding this weekend when temps are finally warm and we have sunshine!!

thanks in advance,
Andy

Andy,
Are you sure that you have the throttle cable routed correctly? I have done this a couple of times when the pull cable got moved a bit when I went to put the tank back on and it was binding up.
Cheers,

Hi Terry,
Thanks for the reply and yes definitely sure on throttle cable routing as I changed it around a couple of times and no difference - this happens with no tank on the bike.

cheers

Do the slides operate normally without the cable attached and are you positive that the carbs are seated all the way on the rubbers? I am willing to bet you if you could post a photo of the setup as it sits right now, someone will be able to spot the problem fairly quickly. I have limited experience with the 750 (I just picked up one for myself) but I did have to put the stock airbox back on Bud750's cafe before we went to Barber last year and I seem to remember it being a complete pain in the neck.

You were riding Buds cafe750? The blue one? How was it?  When I sat on that bike and tried it seemed really uncomfy on the wrists - but hey if you made it to Barbers and back it must be ok - hows it running? Did Bud ride up to Barbers as well? Or have you bought the blue cafe bike?  ;)

Good idea on the photo - didnt even think of that  ::) - carbs are now off the bike (got up early this morning and undid all lasts nights work...sigh...) so will have another shot tonight. I just cant believe its this hard.....as I said the K2 was super easy....and airbox on that bike slips on an off like its butter!

Anyhow thanks for the suggestions and Ill try again tonight - if not photos will be posted!
cheers

You were riding Buds cafe750? The blue one? How was it?  When I sat on that bike and tried it seemed really uncomfy on the wrists - but hey if you made it to Barbers and back it must be ok - hows it running? Did Bud ride up to Barbers as well? Or have you bought the blue cafe bike?  ;)

We trucked the bikes up and only rode from his mom's house in Birmingham. But yes, those clubmans are not very comfy on the wrist :) which is why I was riding it and he was on his all stock 72. The cafe is no longer blue, it is now burgundy with gold strips on the tank. The only reason I was on that is because my 400 wasn't ready yet. But other than a slight charging issue that bike runs like a top!

As for the K4, take Bud's approach. Just do one thing at a time and check for normal function after each step to eliminate as many variables as possible. Also, you could just call or email him, I am sure he could probably tell you right off the top of his head the possible causes for this.

Andy, I had the same trouble both times I removed my 750K1 carbs. The easiest way is to completely remove the airbox, then, with the finger, apply a little wd40 to the carb throats and intake engine rubbers. You know it takes a lot of struggling to put the rack in; make sure they are all the way in and tighten the clamps.

Now it comes the tricky bit. If you fit the airbox bolts before clamping the intake rubbers, there will be no way to put them aligned. You have to put the airbox box first, hanging on the air, into the carb rack -using the same wd40 aid-. And once all the rubbers are in and the clamps tightened, put the airbox bolts. You will have to press the airbox up, and it will definitely "misalign" the carb rack, but the rubbers will take the flex. If you don't do it that way, there will be no way to put the carb racks into the rubbers, either front or rear, because they would be misaligned and the fit os very tight.

I've found that you can kind of align the carbs by the position of the boots. On my 750, if you were sitting on the seat and looking down at the carbs, the boots on the left would have the numbers 1 and 2 do not point straight up, but point a bit outwards to the left. Same same goes for 3 and 4, only they point out to the right.

Now, the airbox boots have the connectors on an angle. Look at them and you will see that the joint is closer to the airbox grommet on one side. If I remember right, I think when the rubbers are installed in the airbox and the box is sitting level, the connectors angle upwards slightly. I'll have to look at mine to verify...

Good luck!

Hi guys,
BIG thanks to tmht, Raul and Jonesy (whose post I read after I got them on but he was spot on about the numbers being slightly to the left and right - makes a huge difference!).

So tonight I went in the garage armed with the knowledge you guys provided (and some strong determination!) to get these things on. Took my time, lined up the engine rubbers (see Jonesys post) and then with a little WD-40 on the inlets and carbs they went on sooooooo easy and I could tell straight away it was right  ;D. Airbox was next and literally the rubbers just slipped on to the perfect spot. Amazing difference from last night  ::). Then tightened up all the clamps and then airbox bolts (see Rauls post) and that was it!! Easy! Amazing how a day makes a difference.

The throttle is still not snapping back properly and cable routing seems good (and I have one new push cable) so not sure what the problem is there but Ill figure that out - for now the carbs are on, aorbox is on and now tanks back on. Just need to put some oil in the bike and then fire it up for first time in 2yrs! I cant wait.......

thanks for the help and suggestions - as always very much appreciated!!!
cheers
Andy

Andy, regarding the throttle return, just check wether it is a carb issue or cable issue. With both cables removed from the carb rack, actuate on the rack to see if the spring is doing it's job and the carb linkage works smoothly, lifting the carbs needle etc. Then, with the cables still removed, pull from both of them alternatively to see if you can "remotely" turn the throttle grip, and see if there is some friction. It should be smooth as silk. If it's not, you can check a) the bolt below the throttle that adjust the throttle friction -sometimes used to keep the throttle on while warming up the engine-, then the cable lube, and lastly, remove the switch housing to check that the throttle tube is free inside and the cable routing is good too.

Regarding the engine-to-carb rubbers, are they are harder than the airbox-to-carb, that's where the big problem lies. As you know, all of them are at an angle because the distance between intakes in the engine is bigger than the distance between individual carbs. For that reason, there is only one position in wich you can have the four of them aligned. Turn any of them and, because of the angle, the rubber mouth will either move up or down, therefore ruining the alignment. The easiest way for me was to untighten the engine clamps, so I can check for the alignment first -just place the rack in front of the rubbers to visually check alignment and separation-, and once it was spot on, slide the carbs all the way in and tighten the eight clamps.

Thanks Raul you were spot on about the carb-engine rubbers and adding a little wd-40 to the rubbers and carbs made a huge difference. Ill need to go through the throttle return more carefully as I tried most of what you suggested excepts holding the two cable ends and moving the throttle slide. Manually lifting the carb slide and releasing gives   that nice snap back sound so Im pretty sure its not the carbs/slides. I have one new push cable and the pull cable feels good when pulling on it manually - as I said routing seems to be good as well. So Im at a bit of a loss but this weekend Ill have more time to play with it....first I want to see how it sounds when started up first! Been a long time coming....the trip bike is almost back on the road - last time was crossing the US on the Easy Rider trip in August 2004!!

Ill keep you posted on progress and thanks for the very helpful suggestions - just what I was looking for!
cheers
