Frankenbike?
« on: June 21, 2005, 04:17:55 AM »
Hi All,

Just a few questions for the numbers guru's  ???  I just bought a '76 CB750 for a paltry 150 bucks, but was baffled by the numbers... Is this a bike made from 2? A check of the frame and engine numbers chart still left me wondering, as the numbers don't seem to fit... The numbers are... Engine: CB750E 2520172 (K motor??) and the Frame: CB750F 2004951, (mfg. 5/75). Is this an F or K model?... the remains of color on the underside of the tank look to be sulfur yellow.... , but shouldn't the motor be CB750FE, as in F model bikes?

Also, what are the cues to look for on a super sport model? this bike has spokes and both front and rear disc brakes... ??? What is the HP output of this motor vs. a super sport, or is there no real difference?

Any answers would be great..

(sorry for the dumb questions, but, as the name implies, I haven't been on a bike in 15 years.. **LOL**)

All the best!
Mike

Mike,
On both of my 750F's, the engine didn't have an "F" anywhere in the serial number.  The frame definately is an "F" model.

Thanks for the replies! So it is officially an F model.. does this designation signify a super sport model? (BTW this is good info, as I found JC whitney offers plastic side covers for 24.00 each, but I needed to know for sure if it was an F or a K... cool!!)

Those covers are for the F BUT the mounting system is different. Come to think of it Dzuz fastners wouldn't be a bad idea with them. As for horsepower 50 to 55 depending on state of tune and mileage.

David Silver Spares has direct replacement (pattern) sidecovers for both the K and F and they use the stock mounting system.

I would not mind stock covers but I like the bolt on mounting. Never have to worry about a cover coming off by accident and it makes theem more difficult for some ass to steal them. They still can yes but they have to unscrew 3 bolts which takes longer than poping 3 little posts.
