What kind of motorcycle is a Johnson, Terry?

Here is the answer to your question -

HARLEY DAVIDSON FACES STIFF COMPETITION FROM JOHNSON MARINE WHO
INTRODUCES A NEW LINE OF MOTORCYCLES

At a press conference late Monday, the CEO of Johnson Marine,
makers of Johnson outboard marine engines and other recreational
equipment, unveiled a new line of heavyweight cruiser style
motorcycles designed to compete head to head with industry leader
Harley-Davidson.

Peter Long, Johnson brands marketing manager said, "We have studied
the market and determined that Harley, while highly successful,
has narrowly missed the mark when targeting motorcycle buyers". Long
added, "We at Johnson are convinced that our product hits the target
dead center and promises to draw sales away from Harley-Davidson
in a way no other motorcycle has been able to accomplish".

The new line of bikes, marketed under the name Big Johnson
Motorcycles, will, according to Long, deliver what Harley has
only promised. "Our research show that this, a Big Johnson, is
what Harley buyers are really after".

At the unveiling of the new line Monday, several current Harley
owners agreed. "When I bought my Harley, what I really needed was
a Big Johnson," said one Harley owner." But I see now that riding
a Harley is no replacement for having a Big Johnson."

Manager Long also said that his company would follow the lead of
Harley-Davidson and cash in on a huge market for non-motorcycle
related products. "We realize that not every guy can have a Big
Johnson," said Long, "But image is very important to people. If
they don't have a Big Johnson, they at least want to project the
image of having one."

Asked if he anticipated Big Johnsons showing up in the hands of
Harley owners, Long said it was unlikely. "I just don't see the
need to have a Harley if you have a Big Johnson," he said. "And I
can't imagine someone who spends all their resources to acquire
a Harley having a Big Johnson. I think it boils down to this -
You either have a Harley, or you have a Big Johnson, but you
are not likely to have both." "Given the choice," said Long,
"I think most guys will opt for the Big Johnson."

Another force driving sales for the company will come from women. A
survey of the wives and girlfriends of nearly 1,000 potential
motorcycle buyers indicates less than 5% would approve of their
partner spending $15,000 on a Harley Davidson. But, when asked if
they would be willing to pay the same amount of money to get their
partner a Big Johnson, nearly 4 out 5 thought that would be money
well spent.

One female present at the product unveiling was quoted as saying,
"There is no way I will let Lonnie drop 15 grand on another one of
those Harleys, but 15 grand to get him a Big Johnson? Well, that's
something we could both enjoy, and it's something he really needs."

Carla Roundheel, manager of the dealership network now being
established, said her motto is simple. "I service what we sell." Big
Johnson Motorcycles will be traded on the New York stock exchange
under the abbreviation PNSNV.

Brilliant! You should have posted that in the BS thread too Greg! Cheers, "Big Terry".  ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

slightly off topic but not. Isn't Big Johnson a tent. I was given a T-shirt years ago that had a guy lying down with a pup tent showing only one pole(in the correct position)

My little tale of Honda Vs. Harley,

The local old men harley rider's are shining chrome while I rebuilt my engine, they bought doo dads, I bought con-rods, pistons, head, rings, gaskets, fork springs wheel bearings, and on and on and on, they've spent waaaaaay more money than me, and are still polishing #$%*, when I fired my bike up two weeks ago.....

oh ya and one of them just bought their daughter a 1200 sportster, who hasn't even riden a dirtbike yet... lame...

Harleys are just large man purses, just there to decorate with chrome jewelry.

Try being a Honda owner in Milwaukee.  You get a lot worse than that.  It's worth the hassel though, I hate choppers and Harleys.

This I can relate to. This is why we did the Sorry Charlies, No Harley's page on our website. I like it when a guy goes "That was the best bike I ever owned", I say it still is.  ;D
Contact me for affordable rotor drilling services at $55 each rotor. Same day service on CB750/CB500/CB550 rotors. Next day on everything else.

I have a fun Harley story.

My brother in law's friend Jimmy recently got the bug when we rode up to his house over the weekend unannounced.  My bro in law Cory was on his '70 Moto Guzzi Ambassador and I was on my '82 Honda CB650.  Jimmy came outside drooling and talking about how much he wanted a bike.

He called my brother in law a week later saying he was at the Harley dealership getting ready to buy a bike.  My brother in law drove an hour to get to the dealership to try and talk him out of it, and when he got there he saw his friend standing outside fuming.  Apparently none of the salespeople inside even glanced at him in his jeans and t-shirt.  Even walked PAST him to talk to an older "wealthier looking" couple.  He had been ready to drop $15k on a new bike.  When they went back inside, they had to grab a salesperson standing there to get him to talk to him.  Jimmy asked why the prices differed so much between the MSRP in the brochure and the tag prices.  The salesperson told him, "Oh, all Harleys are sold above MSRP.  But we might come DOWN to MSRP in negotiations."  WHAT?!?!  My mouth even dropped open when I heard that piece of news.

Suffice it to say they both left the dealership with Jimmy never planning to look back at Harleys.  But a week later my brother in law got another call from Jimmy, this time saying, "Cory, I found a great deal.  They've got a 2002 Sportster here at the dealership...  It's kinda dirty, it's been in a wreck and it leaks some oil, but they're only asking $4500 for it!"  Cory got in the car again, drove an hour to the dealership and found Jimmy had fallen into the classic Harley ploy...  They have a "cheap" Harley sitting on the floor, but for just $1500 more you can get THIS model with THESE features.  And for just $2000 MORE you can get THIS model with THESE features...  So on and so forth.  Jimmy had moved from $4,500 to over $12,000 in the blink of an eye.  Cory caught him just in time.  Took him down to S&G Cycles in Columbia TN (a REAL motorcycle shop...  The only place you'll ever see a Zundapp, Brough Superior and Indian Scout just sitting out on crowded display floor).

Jimmy bought himself a 1980 Honda CB750 DOHC for $800 that same day from S&G.  I can't wait to go riding with him.   ;D

:'( that was a wonderful story "sniff sniff"     ;D
But thence came the Great Schism, when the two like tribes diverged, and the Bobbers did take the Road to Cruiserdom and the Cafe Racers did ride to Sportbikedom and they did pollute the lands along their paths with their abominable spawn of Choppers, Stuntaz and like manner of unholy douchebaggery

It's a really cool shop.  And the owner came around and shot the #$%* with me and my brother in law for about an hour when we stopped by.  Super friendly.

It's the only place I've ever seen a Brough Superior that wasn't in a display case  ;D

They seem to be riders and not just collectors. I guess maybe I feel that a bikes best use is on the road not as a walled off display.

I know I have told this story in another thread but it is appropriate to tell again.

During a Christmas party this last December my brother in law who is a big Harley lover wanted to talk to me about my CB750F3 and its progress. One of his friends at the party over heard part of the conversation and later that evening he wanted to start up a conversation so he came over to me and asked, "So I heard you bought a bike. What kind did you get?". I proceeded to tell him all bout my 1978 Honda CB750 Super Sport when I noticed his eyes glazing over. He said nothing in reply, turn around and walked away... My brother in law told me not to mind him, he thinks the ONLY motorcycle that should be allowed on the road is a Harley...

Well I am glad I don't have to worry about Harley's wanting to share the road with me around here. One less idiot to watch for... :D
Maybe I will start affectionally calling my 750 an Anti-Harley bike.

What you need to do is find that guy when he is riding and blow his chrome all over the road!  He may not change his mind but it will certainly be fun for you! ;D

Well, he's got some nice things, but it bugs me that so many bikes don't have prices.  If I'm going to fantasize, I like details.
