tuning and coil question
« on: April 28, 2007, 08:44:25 PM »
I just got my 76 550F back from the shop...some minor carb adjustments. Now I can at least drive it around but it still is not running right (It ran like a champ for 3000 miles previously).

Now plugs 2 and 3 are sooty, 1 and 4 are tan like they should be. The mechanic said that everything is tuned right in the carbs and that the problem is likely electrical or maybe compression related. Since 2 and 3 share the same coil I am going to swap the coils and see if the problem moves. I have new points, new plugs, new caps,  good timing and valves are adjusted.

I haven't changed the condensors yet....could that be apart of the problem as well??  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks

My first guess is that the mechanic is feeding you a load of B.S. about the problem not being caused by the carbs because he doesn't want to mess with them anymore.  Carb work requires a lot more patience and care than most mechanics can afford to have.

Thanks yall. I was kind of figuring that too. Everything in the carbs are stock, he adjusted the float levels in the carbs.

Is it mainly the float levels and the needle clip position that effects the air/fuel mixture??

The last mechanic my buddy had work on the 550 claimed to have gone through the carbs and had no explanation for the rough idle and clicking noise. >:(

I reset the valve clearance! ;D
That was a $200 mistake on his part! which is what one deserves for not learning to do your own service! ;)
