long story short, 55 miles from home and bike won't start after pizza/soda break.  maybe battery?  tried a bump start - won't turn over.  pushed the bike up a steep hill for a better bump start, but first tried it one more time by the key for good luck.  started right up, then died while putting on my helmet.  i think i heard the cam chain clatter down into the engine.  trucked it home, turns over nicely but valves not moving.  oh -oh.   :o

unknown miles on the engine.  pulled the oil pan last fall - clean, carbs clean, no rust at all inside the rims, all fasteners came apart easily over last winter, overall nice shape.  my plan was to run it this summer, and if all went well, do a valve job and have the tank painted over next winter.

is there access to the lower cam chain sprocket from the oil pan?  am thinking of using a new cam chain with masterlink, and fishing each end up via a wire from above after the valve cover is off.

or is this a bad time to be an optimist?

am away on business for a few days, will dive into it when i get home.  any/all hints welcome.

I would highly recommend pulling the heads and inspecting the valves.  I would be very surprised if at least one didn't get smacked by the piston.

this is an engine with zero clearance if the timing is off?  well, crapola.
