swingarm woes...twice!!!
« on: June 21, 2005, 08:45:04 AM »
74 750/4   ... swingarm was worn so I replaced the whole lot with genuine Honda parts, bushings tube etc. etc. torqued it all up correct andset off on a cross country ride. 600 miles later checked it and it had as much play in as before. So halfway through my 20,000 mile trip all over the statres I put aftermarket bronze bushes in but the same thing, a few miles later swingarm had play again :o. anyone had similar problems? I am loath to spend any more money for parts which dont work. Does anyone know the correct diameter for the tube. maybe the new Honda one was machined wrong (that alone cost about 80 bucks over 3 yrears ago.)
So all this didn't make for a nice bike to ride on the mountain bends!  :o >:(

Could be the swingarm is worn and not the bushings.  I have a swingarm off of 75 750 you could get.  It was supposed to be for a 77, another E-bay burn.  Let me know.

Thanks for the offer I'll see if i can fix this first.
But no, the bushes are tight fit in swingarm. I have a sneaking feeling the OEM Honda tube too small because it just slid in the bushes too easily! Thats the only thing I can think of what'd allow for play after so few miles. 2 types of brand new bushes I have tried along as I said with all new oem everything else for the swingarm! >:(
I'm going to go to the salvage yard tomorrow where I've got lots of parts before. They used to have quite alot of good bikes in. Hopefully ithey still do.
But I'd still like to hear from any others who have had similar swingarm problems.

The pivot pin should slide in easily but with no noticeable play. The were a few different pin diameters on different model bikes perhaps one has been mixed up and part numbered wrong. Chech the diameter against the specs in the manual.

Mmmm, maybe that could be it? Do you know what years they changed  pivot diameter? I remember mine just slid in too easily from new. Expensive new at that! :o

Not different by years possibly from a totaly different model. I know the early 750 and 500 were the same but things changed when the grease nipples moved from each end of the bolt to just one under the swing arm and the bushes became top hat shape instead of having the loose thrust washers and steel caps
