Fork Drain Plug broken- too soft for easy out?
« on: April 23, 2007, 09:12:17 PM »
Hello all!

First things first- I have a 1978 CB750F. I bought the bike over the winter and I have been bringing her back up to spec for a few months. I have had a bit of luck getting it all off the ground and things were going pretty well until today. The bike was stored for 23+ years and it had to gone through a bit, but it's in great shape and running pretty well. I've put on a few hundred miles since it warmed up. I noticed last week that I was leaking fork oil out of the left front fork, so I parked her and ordered up new seals. This was on top of my 82 Magna's seals busting out after 200 miles this season as well (so, I pretty much hate front ends right now). Today I had planned on draining the fluid and getting started on the fork seal fix... I got everything set up- tools ready, drain pan in place, etc. First light turn of the wrench and half of the drain plug is laying on the ground. The head and about a 1/4 of an inch of the plug laying on the ground mocking me.

So, my question is this- is the fork material and that specific region unsafe for such a removal without damaging the fork?

Should my plan be to simply drill it out and go for a tap? And if so, what should I use for a replacement plug?

I've never done a tap personally, but a buddy of mine said he would help if that was the route I wanted to go.

Wisdom- cynicism- tips all appreciated and encouraged
