rear wheel bearings -help- noob here -cb350f-
« on: February 12, 2007, 11:28:19 AM »
hi all,

i am new to the SOHC world, but have a complete tear down and rebuild on a triumph.

i've done a search and mainly what i find is bearing topics regarding cb750's.

i have the bearing retainer off of the chain side, screwed right out with a spanner.

for the life of me, i cannot figure out how to get the bearings out.  i've tried a drift and hammer, but didn't want to get too enthusiastic, before i knew what was going on.

any help is appreciated.

thanks,

db in slc, ut

ok, i got it out.

i used a long 9/16 socket and the drift to get move the center piece, driving the brake side bearing out.  then used the drift to get the drive side.

worked like a charm.  bearings feel shot to me.  the have 'tick' feel to them when turning by hand.

Glad we could help!   ;)

Actually, glad to see your post, as I intend to change mine when I get some new tires in the next month or so.

Welcome to the forum!  Lots of help here for your rebuild.  Tons of folks who are very knowledgable...

Arise old thread, ARISE!!!

I was having some trouble last night getting these rear wheel bearings to come out.  I stuck the 9/16th in there with a socket extension and tried to tap through, but either the socket goes all the way through the axle hole or it hangs up on something (that big spacer thingy) and stops.  I tried a few other things but wasn't getting anywhere.

In no case does a bearing push out.  Shall I just hit it harder?  Maybe buy it a drink first?

It always seems like my posts for help are on the simplest things... sigh.

If you bang on the spacer it will dent or deform, you should push it aside, it will move just a bit, enough so a drift can grab the bearing inner race and then tap gently on it.

For a lack of the proper drift I used a large flat screwdriver.

Ahhh, I see how it works now- I didn't really understand what was meant by a 'drift'.  Thanks to your response and a quick trip to Google for a picture.  Will give it another go tonight.
