Rear disc brake and axle retainer questions
« on: April 24, 2007, 07:04:10 PM »
I rebuilt the rear caliper on the 750F today and I have a few questions:

1: When disassembling the axle, the little cotter pin that secures the axle castle nut from spinning off broke as I was "unfolding" it.  What's a good source for one locally?  The hardware store?  The bike should be ready to roll and all it lacks is this part, so I don't wanna wait because I had to order it.

2. The rear wheel is spinning more free than before, but I am SOOO scared of another lock-up.  I am not sure if it's spinning free as it should be.  Here's a link to a video that shows me spinning it a few times.  The first few spins are pretty hard, and it only freewheels for a couple revolutions, and the last spin is soft.  Instead of totally freewheeling and coming to rest from natural inertia, it still feels like there is a TEENY amount of drag.

Could 750F owners with perfectly functioning rear brakes take a look at this and tell me if my wheel is spinning freely and the pads are fully releasing?  I REALLY don't wanna have it heat up, boil the fluid, squeezing the pads together and seizing at freeway speeds again.

I think the brake is OK.  I assume you have pressed the brake pedal a few times and the pads are pumped out to the rotor.

I can't tell for sure, but it looks like the chain is a little too tight.  Sounds like it, too.  How much slack have you got at the midpoint?

Yeah, I think the chain is a little tight.  Total up and down play is about 3/4", per the manual, (maybe a hair tighter though).  But it can't hardly be pushed down at all, can be pushed up about 2/3", making about 3/4" total play.

I think I'm gonna loosen it up a little, so there's maybe 1" or so of play.

The brakes were bled, so the pistons are out at the disc.  Gonna re-bleed tomorrow since I was getting 99.99% clear fluid with no bubbles, but occasionally some nearly microscopic bubbles.  Gonna see if they are easier tomorrow.

put your foot on the rear brake pedal and pump it hard a few times...then spin the wheel - if it spins the same as the video after a few tries at this then I think your brake will be fine.....

chain tightness or lack of should be checked/adjusted when you are sitting on the bike....different angle of the dangle of the swingarm relative to the front rear sprocket alignment..

have you checked your wheel balance (spin it the same way with the chain off) if it stops in the same place each time you need to get it balanced...
