Something other than politics

Something other than politics.
you know some days things just kind of hit you out of the blue ,had been a normal day for the most part , 8am -530pm day ,after getting home had to run back out to the store,so took the wife's car, convertable.
Dropped the top on it and proceded down the road ,well about half way to the store something caught my nose ,was the smell of Honeysuckle and if you have never smelled it you have missed out on one of natures great gifts ,pulled over to the side of the road for a moment and took a nice deep breath,as Corney as it might sound all the stress and daily BS just melted away.
Hope everyone here can have their Honeysuckle moment today :)

Peace Ledbetter :)

Nothing corny about that at all. It's a pity that more people don't get a chance to 'smell the roses/honeysuckle/wood burning' or whatever...... Even better during a good two wheeled experience.

I think it's one of todays problems, people are so much in a hurry that they don't take the time to enjoy the smell, sun rise/sets, views, etc.  I always try to find the time to slow down and enjoy the surroundings.

When non riders ask me what it is like to ride a bike. I tell them it is the smells. As I ride through small towns I can smell the gardens and the fresh turned earth. Well there are skunks and other stuff, but on balance it is very plesant. You can also feel the temperature changes between shade and sun. I guess on a bike everything is in real time, not like a car.

Thanks for sharing, ledbetter.  I do a fair job of slowing down to enjoy things that get missed, but it's always good to get a reminder to do it more often.  That reminds me of one of the prettiest things I've seen.  I was driving down a road in Vermont after the apple trees blossomed.  There was a fair breeze, and the white petals were coming down in what looked like a snowstorm.

A quick read of Wikipedia produced this gem:

"During Victorian times, teenage girls were forbidden to bring honeysuckle home because it was thought to induce erotic dreams."

I always enjoy the smell of smoked tobacco hanging in barns around TN.  It's something I look forward to every Autumn.

I just had to share that ,for some reason the last 2-3 weeks have been very stress filled and than like I said It just hit me out of the blue and I realized that most of what was stressing me out just did not matter.
So stop and smell the rose/honeysuckle it just might make your day a little better, and thanks for indulging my occasional rants.

Peace Ledbetter 8)

When out and about riding, which is almost always rural, I feel similarly when passing a newly mowed field of hay and passing dairy farms. Hmm, that last one must say something about me. ::)

Experiences like that ,IMHO, explain why we ride.
It's the connectedness - when it's hot out, I'm hot. Wet out,
I'm wet, cold out...you get it.
Which also reminds me of a joke:
A Buddhist monk walks into a Burger King, the
counterperson asks "What'll you have?".
The monk replies "Make me one with everything."
Bikes parked out front mean good chicken-fried steak inside.

led... you are right.  the smells are incredible this time of year (spring, in the northern hemisphere).  while my girl and i were riding our bicycles a few days ago she found a row of lilac bushes.  of course, being a girl, she had to ride up and down the sidewalk a number of times.  then, to my surprise, i was doing it too.  i grew up on a farm in kansas and  the driveway was lined full w/ lilac bushes... i haven't smelled such goodness in nearly 20 years.

now, western kansas is an entirely different smell  ;)

I went on a ride today down to Loveland to see my friends Brady and Joel at Try City Cycles.....I take the old Greeley highway out of Cheyenne here and drive as much backroad as I can....I love the sheep and cattle smells...(i know I'm sick) the river smells and the "heavy air" at the bottom of a good hill.....you know what I mean? I cant wait for it to warm up some more so I can go up the poudre(spelling?)  canyon!!

I love the way a river smells and how the air gets cooler as you get near it. Or the ocean - The family and I drove all over the Southwest two summers ago and on the way home we drove from Flagstaff AZ straight throiugh death Valley to the beach by Carmel. Nothing like that cold, salty air after being in the desert for a couple weeks...

You've obviously never smelled the Cumberland River as it cools off in the evening...  ;D

You live near a plant that makes s**t?  I'm glad I don't live there!

And I'm at the beach now and all it makes me do is eat.

There's a Purina plant right next to I-70 here in Denver.  I hold my breath for as long as I can when I have to ride past it! :-X

The worst smells I've encountered on the highway were in west Texas driving past the oil fields.  Crude oil has to be one of the most disgusting smells in existence, and they would go on for miles at a stretch!
