taper steering bearing install 71 cb750
« on: April 25, 2007, 08:41:12 AM »
getting ready to install the new all-ball tapered steering bearing.  the lower race looks very thin lip and  looking for any ideas on what other people have use to press it in with.  also what size washer did others use on the bottom for a 71 cb750?  thanks.

Did your kit come with the instructions on how to measure your existing bearings to determine washer thickness?

If I understand your question correct, what I did when I installed mine was use a piece of threaded rod (home depot or Ace - a couple bucks), two large fendor washers ( the diagmeter larger than the the frame stem).  I take two nuts that fit rods.  Take one washer put it on the rod, then add a nut to that same end.  Take the resulting rod and put the bearing on it.  Take this set up, run the rod up through the frame stem, then put the other washer on...then nut...then tighten the nuts.  This will pull the bearing into the frame.  Very easy and cheap.  No press required.  Here is a diagram, crude but makes the point.  The rod is actually about 12" long.

 -  = nut
__ = washer

l  = rod

<> = bearing

__ = washer

- = nut

1) used tool with the pipe nipple to press lower bearing onto stem

2) used tool with custom fit 3/4" washer to press lower bearing race into frame, grind the edge of the washer till it just fits inside the frame

3) used tool with large square washers to press upper bearing race into frame

material: 5/8" rod, 3/4" and 5/8" flat washers, pipe nipple is 1 1/2" pipe x 10"
