K2 Resto Completed
« on: April 27, 2007, 12:21:13 PM »
What do you do w/ a particularly sweet-running K2 over a long winter? Take it all apart to bare frame, and make it as nice as possible. Zinc plate all nuts, bolts, screws, washers and  misc hardware, new tires, ceramic coat aluminum engine covers, penetrol the frame, tapered steering bearings, rebuild caliper and master, restore the gauges, all new cables, fresh seat, rebuild the carbs, fork seals, new chain and sprockets, sharp tune-up, and detail it for all its worth. Everything went smooth as silk.
I pulled the motor solo onto a milk crate, and found an interesting way of putting back together by myself; I laid the engine on its right side and slipped the frame on in like 1 minute w/o any fuss, then proceeded to put mostly together while lying on its side; once the forks, swingarm and wheels were on, I stood it up to finish. Its nice working w/ the fresh zinc hardware and detailed parts; like assembling a new motorcycle.
Can hardly wait for the Sunday ride.

vary nice!

What did you use for the zinc plating?  I'm on the fence with the fasteners on my (re)build... whether I should wire brush the crud off of them and install, or get the kit from eastwood and DIY.

Aggressive wire-brushing will result in rusty parts in a very short while. I simply gave all the hardware including long engine bolts, seat hinges, carb choke arm, rear brake stay and adjust rod, clamps, springs, clips, airbox wingnuts,  etc to a commercial chrome plating shop and asked for clear zinc. It was under $100 and I also gave him ALL my spare nuts, bolts, washers. About 18 pounds of stuff.

Beautiful bike! I always did like that color of garnet brown. I remember a good friend of mine buying a '72 like this brand new. I have done the same thing with the zink plated parts. I think they must charge by the pound. I remember spending HOURS refurbishing the heads of phillips screws and nicked bolts and nuts. Many times messed up fastener heads still have all the metal on them, the metal is just in the wrong place. With a punch and hammer, you can many times repair the fasteners to their original state. Polish them and have them plated.

Very nice work on a very pretty bike.

Did they clean/strip them too? Or did you do that before you sent them out?

Steve

P.S. Amazing machine...as usual.

Thatsa bee-ootiful bike mate, for sure! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I am SO jealous: as you can see from my avatar, that is exactly what mine USED to look like.
Fantastic (and inspirational!) job, 736!

Now, I gotta find me some side covers and tank stripes. My heart's beginning to yearn for her beauty...
