More What Are These???????
« on: May 07, 2007, 06:59:35 PM »
I just got a complete gasket set and have no idea what these three items are. Pic 1 is some sort of rubber disc with a heavier bead around the edge. Pic 2 is a rubber cylinder with beveled openings. Pic 3 is a metal ring with corrugations on the inner and outer surfaces. Your wisdom is appreciated.

Pic 1 are the gaskets that go under the cam towers.  Pic 2 looks like a valve stem oring.  Pic 3 could be exhaust gaskets (though they're really weird if they are).

Without a size reference I can't say with 100% certainty, but #3 looks exactly like an exhaust header gasket to me.

#1- As other said, those are the rubber sealing "pucks" that cover the large bolt access holes under the cam towers.

#2- Looks like the oil feed passage seals that go between the case/cylinder and cylinder/head (they are cylindrical in shape and supercede the O-rings that used to go in there). Those look like the ones I got from Honda when I rebuilt the top end on my uncle's 750 last summer.

#3- I concur it looks like the exhaust gasket.

O.K., here is where I am at this point. The rubber cyninders in the second hoto above do not fit any gelleys anywhere on the head I have. I'll figure it out later I guess. After removing eight, yes eight, copper exhaust gaskets from the the metal rings fit perfectly in the recesses, so I guess that is what they are though I have never seen one like these, just copper or asbestos. Anyway, on to the new photo. I have already figured out what #2 is for, no problem there. Numbers 1, 3, and 4 though have me at a loss. The sizes are:

#1: 1/8" i.d., 1/4" o.d.
#3: 7/16" i.d., 9/16" o.d.
#4: 2.5" i.d. (big)

I don't have the rest of the engine with me but I would guess that these either fit in the case or on the cam towers.

More wisdom for me?

First pics:

#2: Jonesy got it right, and your cylinders don't use these so set them aside.

Last pic:

#1: oil feed passages under the cam towers. You should have four of these.

#2: oil feed passages between cylinder/head and cylinder/base. Again, there should be four

#3: These look like the oil line(from oil tank to engine) orings. There should be two of these. If there are three of them then they are the o-rings for your oil pump. hard to judge actual size from your pic.

#4: These fit at the base of the cylinder sleeves. You should have four of these.

Sorry for not gettin' back to you sooner, Jeff. Congrats on the new place :)

I recently bought an original Honda carb o-ring set. There was a metal washer I couldn't imagine where did it go. With the set there was a paper that, obviously, I didn't take the time to read thinking it was just a parts list.

The o-ring set part number was different than the one I order, but I just thought it had been superseded sometime in the past. By reading the enclosed paper I understood what was going on: the set I bought was superseding two different o-ring set for two different models, and depending wich one you were using, some parts were going nowhere. That is, the set had a number of common o-rings, and then specific o-rings for two different carb models, and you had to use only the ones you need depending on the model you had. I guess Honda reckoned it was cheaper to reduce the number of o-ring sets than to throw away some washers or o-rings that would be never used -though the customer would pay for them at the end-

Could it be that it is the same case than yours?

I don't know for sure Raul, this is an Athena kit but there are no arts list or descriptions included. I'll just have to muddle through ;D ;D ;D

Just thought of another question. I have a head from a 77 or 78, can the exhaust mounting studs be removed to allow the spigot to be mounted in its place?

Response to your last question:  YES.  I'm going the reverse on my 750.  From spigots to studs.
