Long Term Test----Cycle-X carbs
« on: April 24, 2007, 09:11:56 AM »
Well, not real long term---6 months.
But , this past weekend I did take 'em on the longest trip to date--150 miles.
I think the secret is that these babies need to heat up.
After things got hot, the slight throttle lag disappeared
and response got quicker with good power.
Rides: 75 CB750F, 48 Indian Chief, 67 Triumph TR6, 63Honda CA95

Thinking about this setup for my next project. Are you running a basically stock engine? Did you have much problems getting them tuned?
I am going to be doing a 836, cam, ported head... nothing too extreme, just a good strong street motor. I still need to call them, but getting to a quiet place around work to use the phone is somewhat of a challenge.

No doubt high performance carbs are big $$, I just cant see the point of spending that kinda cash
on a bike I bought for 1/2 that (my opinion)...

I certainly see your point. I have been struggling with that on this project as I got the bike for $100. But after spending the money on the big bore and cam... it seems kind of pointless to be held back by the stock carbs since I essentially got the bike for free... but every time I think of something else that needs to get done for this project and add it to the spreadsheet (the only way the wife/accountant will cut a check  :P) and watch that total go up... I just remind myself that a new bike is well over 2x my total budget for this project and this will be MY bike when it is done.

Bike is stock but had been timed and points and valve adjusted "to death".
No tuning problems.
Just wanted to run lean at first. Raised needles all the way--fine now.--needs to heat up, as I said.

I've got some for sale. I think your bike has to be in a really good state of tune for these to work correctly.
I've gone back to stock carbs with pods, and since my bike is a little worn, the cycle x carbs were just too difficult for me to tune properly.
Somebody wants them, make me an offer.
No.

I thought they were pricy. I am sure someone would pay 2-300 for them. It might just take some time.

300 is prolly what i'm looking for. The carbs alone are over 200 bucks, let alone the custom manifolds.

Not trying to ruin any one's sale here. But, I just got off the phone with the fellow from Cycle Exchange and he DOES NOT recommend that these carbs be used on a stock frame. He says that the vertical tubes on the frame and the stock oil bag interfere with the airflow into the carbs. That being said, he said lots of people have used them in the past with a little tweaking and not much issues.

Right. I had no real problem with frame clearance. Stuck the big pods out to the side.
Was going ot move the oil tank down, anyway, so would have been a good fit after that. Like I said, the motor itself needs to be in pretty tip-top condition for these to work well, I think. Mine isn't.
