more carb questions
« on: May 03, 2007, 07:43:26 AM »
follow up on my carb rebuid question.  i think i will try and clean and reuse the orignial honda parts, what parts should i replace from the get go.  how can i tell if the needle and other parts are actually honda parts or if they are aftermarket.  the bike has probally changed hands several times.  is it better to just by a kit and use the gaskets and others and justreuse the needle?  thanks again

That is what I did.  Even though the kit came with a new needle, I kept the one that was in because something was telling me that I had installed a needle with a different tapper back in the '80's.

That's what I did as well on my '70 (K0). Found the kit needles were a different taper than the originals. Not sure how you can tell if you have the original needles or not. The kit contained new float valves also, bud didn't use them because the spring tip was much too stiff. The only thing I ended up replacing on mine were the float bowl gaskets.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

I never compared the float valve springs.  I guess an overly stiff one could cause a problem if the carb is subjected to heavy vibration.  Other than that, I don't see a problem.  But I will admit that I am far away from knowing it all.

You really only need to replace the soft parts, gaskets, O-rings, etc.  Just clean everything well.

Dunno about the needles, but the jets should be marked for size.  Compare them to the book to see if anyone's "improved" things.  As you get into them, you may find you need to replace some of the "hard" parts.  Doubtful, but possible.  If so, start by getting original Honda parts.  Once you have them, compare them to what came out before putting in the new ones.
