500T Help needed please with kickstart

Hi
A friend at work has just rebuilt a Honda 500T from a box of bits , and is now at the point where its ready for its mot test when disaster has struck !!!
The kickstart shaft has broken at the point where the spline meets the engine case ,does anyone have one or know where he can obtain a replacement
and do you have to take out the engine to replace it .
This would not be a problem if it had a electric start that works but I'm told the starter motor is broken .

YOUR help would be much appreciated

Get your parts from www.davidsilverspares.co.uk cant remember if its an engine out or not and the electric boot eas notorioius for not working
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

THANK YOU , to all that have viewed my request for help sadly so far no luck with a replacement i had hoped that someone
may have had one at the back of there workshop somwhere.
From what i gather the starter is  problem on this machine , and im told that David Silver do not list the shaft but do have the shaft seal,
so for the time being we are a bit stuck , it seems a shame to scrap the project at this late stage so we will have to wait for the next auto jumble
or look in the adds

   Dave,  I don' have an extra one myself, if I come across one I'll let you know. Of course I'm a good distance away from you though. Also, you can replace it with out pulling the motor too.

Thanks for the reply , yes it is a bit far although Ive not ruled out importing the part and Ive now got the part number so this may help.
You say it can be removed without taking out the motor this is not what Ive read or am i wrong ? any help you can give is most welcome.

Thanks for that , Ive been told that the later 5 speed  450 has the same part and will try and and check the part number
its a good idea as there seem to be more 450s than the 500s  .
The 500t seems to have not been liked at all in the UK and does not seem to have been one of Honda's best but i have
to say it looked not bad to me back then and even now .

Dave,, I was sure that the kick start shaft could be replaced without pulling the motor. To be on the safe side, I checked my Clymer's Repair Manual for the 450-500 DOHC and it says to split the case which means pulling the motor. I'd have sworn that you could pull the clutch cover and maybe the clutch itself and take care of it. If you've got a little time (a couple of days) I've got a CL450K6 motor that is on the bench and I'd like to doublecheck to be sure. I hope I haven't given you false hopes.

        As far as interchangeability goes, a good number of parts will swap from the 450 to the 500. The head is different but will swap. I think the oil pump is different but will swap. The 500T trans gearing (between the gears) is spaced out differently. The crankshaft has a longer stroke and the crank bearings are larger and won't fit the 450 case. The forward valve cover is slightly finned, not sure about the rear one.  There might be other differences in the motor/trans but not sure. I will let you know what I find out about the kick start shaft.

so thank you and yes i would like to know how you get on, time is not an issue as i don't think
we are going to get the problem sorted to soon but will keep you informed if anything does

Dave: CMSNL FISCHE SHOWS THE SAME PART # FOR CB450 K4 TO K7 AND CB500t. Part # 28250-292-010. Also shows a good diagram how it goes together. Should be easy to find a 450 shaft. Glenn

That part number still shows up on the cmsnl web site at 106 (Euros i think) but if they have it Dave Silver will get it for you as he deals with them on a weekly basis. Ring them (silver that is) and ask if he can get one for you.

I  WOULD LIKE TO SAY A BIG THANKS TO YOU ALL !!

Well things have taken a unexpected turn to say the least , the owners wife fed up with the whole thing has gone and found a better working and more
complete 500t on ebbay , they have made the winning bid and are due to collect the new bike this weekend , i did not find out until i went back to work
Tue .
I do hope this one is as good as the pictures make out , the plan is to run the new baby which Ive been informed does  not need any work for the mot , and part out
the first to offset the six hundred pounds spent on the new one , we will see .


anyway A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL YOUR EFFORTS ARE APPRECIATED

                       Not a problem here Dave, never know just how things are going to work out, huh? ???
          Best I could tell, the motor WAS going to have to be pulled to replace the kick starter shaft
          anyway. :-\ Guess things worked out for the best. ;)
