Badge/Emblem Color onfirmation Needed - 1974 CB750 K4
« on: May 02, 2007, 09:10:57 AM »
Guys,

Due to recent ribbing by Jonesy, I've ordered and now received a new set of reproduction "wings". These are the small triangular HM wings that fit on the side covers, just unfer the 750 Four emblem.

What is on there is two right-side NOS pieces and the color of the jeweled stone is yellow. These new pieces are red. I've looked through my Mike Duckworth book on the history of the CB750 and it would appear that 1974 was in fact RED (page 62 - 1974 model).

Now isince the microfiche doesn't specify color and these are long since discontinued, what it the correct color? I'm not going to loose any sleep on this one since very few other things in and on the engine are stock, but I was going for the "correct" cosmetics on the body and seat.

Input appreciated as always.

Thanks,
Gordon

... Hello Gordon, my '74 has the gold wing diamonds. I ordered a new pair back in the mid 1980's, when you could still order them, and the golds were the ones that came in. All the '73-'74 bikes that I remember around here back in the day, had the golds.  Cheers,  :)

Well, two for two - must be I've got the wrong colored ones. I'd rather have two yellow wings and one of them pointing wrong than to have two red ones. Two wrongs don't make it right, I've always been told.

Thanks again guys. Gordon

I've been trying to figure this one out for my K6.  I have what were supposed to be the original pieces, and they are orange, (there is a more yellow color out there in addition to the red & orange; I believe we are all discussing the orange ones...) but they are a bit worn and one is missing the pins.  I wanted to order new ones but was told there is a superseded number change from 87126 (87127) -341-000 to 87126 (87127) -300-405.  A Google search on the 300-405's turns up the red pieces.  I have some on order from Honda and will be curious to see what color shows up, since I had heard they were discontinued and thought it odd that they even had them at all.

I did find orange reproductions at cmsnl:

Edited to add original number (...-341-000)

As I recall, the red wing emblems were on the first year model they went to the more rounded sidecovers (K1 I think). Then, for the next model year they were changed to orange-yellow and stayed that way until the K7.

Red wings are one year only 1971 K1.  1972 - 1976 use yellow wings. Everybody seems to want the yellow for correct restoration and the supply has caused the prices to be much higher for K2-6 wings.

Do you care about the color?

Yep, I'd rather have two right side wings than red ones.

$45 from cmsnl seems a pretty good price if they are like original; I assume it is a pair L/R?

I have seen guys in Europe asking 100 euros for the yellow.

My problem is solved. A good friend and a valuable parts supplier to this CB750 has a NOS pair - these are factory Honda and ones he's had in storage for years. He is going to give me a left  and I send him mine. I've decided to give him my red ones that he can sell to buy a replacement down the road. He's happy - I'm very happy as I'm out nothing because the aftermarket ones were bought to correct the one "wrong winged" one anyway. There is no way I'd send it back. Thise people bent over backwards trying to get me the needed badge in time for our VJMC show.

He thinks the red is only valid for the 1972 model and the 1973~1976 were yellow.

Thanks for all of the input. Jonesy, don't you feel just a little bad about stirring all of this up in the first place?  ;D

Regards,
Gordon

Nope. Now I can sleep at night knowing that darned wing is on the correct way! ;) :D

All kidding aside, I'm glad you were able to find the right ones. Think of it this way: Now folks won't be coming up to you and saying, "Beautiful bike, but one of the wings is on backwards...".
