I'm going to have to ask you all to calm down.

It's clear that we all feel strongly about our respective countries.  And while no one is totally happy with the government(s), this thread(at least as I see it) was "Hey, look at what these teachers did. Isn't that ridiculess.", so how did we get to where we seem to be now.  All this talk about "read the Constitution" and "special interest groups" and socialism.  This is a motorcycle forum, even though we are in the open forum part.  It does seem that we are getting a little too intense.  After all, it seems to me that it's just a case of too many kids and not enough "cool pieces" to go around.  And with (probably) little or no money for more Legos, the teachers are only trying the best they can.  Besides, you can't always give in to the demands of little kids, that only makes them brats.  And who wants that.

Now if you can't play nice, I'm going to take your Legos away!

ALMOST NO ONE will work for the greater good.

2 words my friend: STAR TREK!  It's gonna happen some day...  Our system of capitalism will eventually fail.

I agree with much of what Eldar is saying.  The interpretation of the Constitution goes both ways.  Trying to force a 250 year old document into a box and not allow for any changes in society or technological advances that were only figments of peoples' imaginations is recipe for failure.  The Constitution was written as a liquid document, with allowances for drastic changes.  The only problem is our political system has become so wrapped up in bureaucracy that meaningful change is next to impossible.

Dan, the Constitution had more to do with enabling those technical advances than being destroyed by them, simply by ensuring that the people were guaranteed the basic human rights provided therein for the first time in history.

I agree.  The tremendous body of legislation that has followed the Constitution has really changed the original intent of that elegant document in a mostly negative way.

Yet look at how much it has been twisted and warped.

So you think that because the advances have happened, that therefore they should be restricted because of a strict conservative interpretation?  I'm not saying the Constitution is irrelevant, I'm saying it's a document that holds some pretty outdated practices right alongside the basic rights that are most important to this society.

For example: the Electorial College.  A very efficient system of communication from an era where there was no instantaneous international data transfer.  Not so efficient anymore, is it?  So basically we're just keeping it around for posterity, and out of the political fear of what might happen if we removed it.  We're so afraid to change our system of government that it is now nearly impossible to change it, period.

No Dan, but the Constitution provided very clear ways to amend it, that have been exercised several times over the years, mostly to good effect.  Let's try to forget about prohibition and its subsequent repeal.  In reality, I don't think one could point out many items that are not relevant today.

I think I agree with you about the electoral college.  Once we become able to guarantee that the person sitting behind the browser is the eligible voter they claim to be, I'm not clear on why we'd need to maintain the electoral college.  Granted, my position is only my first thought on the matter, and I'd prefer to have a more full understanding of the problem and the potential solution before I "commit" to that statement and open up another argument!

Maybe I'm just afraid of what this country is becoming and how it's using the Constitution as a political football...  About how close this country came to actually passing a "flag desecration" amendment, or an amendment to ban gay marriage.  It's just...  For a society that's so hellbent on freedom, it certainly seems pretty closed-minded.

Two perfect examples of how the system works beautifully.  Neither one of those things exist today.  Did I miss something?

But at the same time there's still no equal rights amendment for women.  It's not so perfect as it could be.

Try going through divorce court, and you'll see why women don't want equal rights. ;D

But seriously, in what way do women need any additional legislation to give them rights that they are already provided by the Constitution and its amendments?  ERA was just a vote-scavenging ploy.

Thank you.

Interesting discussion I was missing out on.

Couple of thoughts, no Canada is not socialist, thought there have been University Studies in that very area
(I was part of one long ago). Oh, yea, it's really hard to get David to even share a beer.  ;D

Electoral College;

My understanding of it is to preserve a republican form of representative government
(no not the Republican party, they can go straight to hell).
Ours was not to be a majority rule democracy, there is probably no greater tyranny that that
of a majority. Ours was to be a Democratic Republic.

Also, were the Constitution strictly adhered to,
there should be no IRS, nor income tax.
there would be no meddling of the Feds in State business,
there would be no notion of us belonging to the FEDS (social security for instance)
there would be no looking to the Feds to bale us out,
so there would be a greater since of community and statesmanship.

I could go on but it's past my bed time.

You know what I like best about being a member of this forum? We all are quite opinionated about certain things, be it politics, guns, religion or what-not. And we get quite heated about it too.

But we all share a common interest in the motorcycles we ride and I believe that it doesn't matter how heated Eldar, Dammit, linder, anyone else or I get about a particular topic, when it comes to the crunch if we all got together for a ride and a burger we'd have a hell of a good time......

It's true. #$%*, if we couldn't get along with people that don't share our political views, etc., we'd have no one to hang out with.
No.
