Straightening the front wheel?
« on: August 20, 2005, 11:27:51 AM »
After reassmbling my front end, the handle bars/instrument cluster seem to be a bit off when the wheel is put straight. The wheel is spinning freely and I don't nottice any difference when riding it around the neighborhood (other than it being weird to see the handle bar at an angle when you're going straight down the road).

Since everything is running OK, I can't picture any place to adjust either the wheel or handle bars to align them. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Darrell

Loosen the upper triple clamp bolts. Stand in front of the bike and straddle the front wheel while twisting the bars in the direction you wish to correct. I use the gap in the clamp below the center steering nut to line up with the center frame tube. Re-tighten clamps.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

That one bolt next to the tank that holds the triple tree on, or the one that screws down around the next that needs the special tool? Or both?

Just loosen the two bolts that pinch the the top clamp to the forks and the one bolt that pinches the top clamp to the steering stem. The large(30mm) nut that sits above your steering stem can be loosened for extra "play", but the bearing retainer? that needs the special tool does not need to be loosened. Basically, you will be taking the clamp pressure off of your forks and steering stem so that you can "twist" your bars to be in alignment with your front wheel.
