New BSM Exhaust (updated- new pictures)
« on: April 26, 2007, 12:40:07 PM »
AAARGH!

So I ordered a new bsm to replace the rotting monstrosity that was on my bike when I bought it.

I really liked the look of the BSM because the header pipes join in a flat manifold that looked like it tucked up under the frame nicely.  I started bolting it up and everything looked good until I went to attach  the muffler.

Any suggestions?  I'm thinking about heading to a muffler shop and seeing if they can fab me up a connector to put between the collector and the muffler.

Anyone else have another suggestion?

This thing costs so much to ship that I really don't wanna deal with sending it back to DSS, up I've emailed them anyway just to see what they say.

Should have known better that to try something a little out of the ordinary, eh?

Are you saying the transition from the header to the muffler is too small??

I know you wouldn't want to mess up that muffler by welding on a reducer like you would get from AutoZone.

All that I can think of, is using spacers. By cutting off sections of the reducer. And keep on stacking till you get to the
proper diameter.

Sorry I'm not too much of a help

Wait...  What?  What's wrong with the exhaust in the first pic?

The muffler didn't come with a hanging bracket (of several of different lengths) to bolt it up to the rear peg?

Yeah it looks like the hanger is lying on the ground in the first pic

Nope.  the directions show the bracket on the muffler bolting directly to the bottom left bolt on the brake bracket.  It basically looks like the header is 2" too short and 10-15 degrees off.  As it sits now, the end of the muffler is about 3 " away from the axle.

It didn't come with hangars, that's me trying to fab up something so that I can ride to work tomorrow. :D

You could also slacken off the cylinder head clamps and make sure the pipes are setaed properly- sometimes they hang up and a couple off mm difference at the front makes a lot of difference at the rear.

loosen head pipe bolts, attach muffler, swing it up as close as possible.
Does not look like the pipe is sitting high enough the way it is.
raising it up -should- get you close enough to where it is supposed to go to get it adjusted right.

Thanks gents.  I'll give it a try when I get home tonight-  Assuming that it's not raining cats and dogs by then.

Thats the same exhaust that Cursed1 has on his bike now.
He put three small self tapper screws on the backside to hold the muffler onto the collector, and is gonna fab up a bracket to go from the frame to the exhaust eventually..

Well, Y'all were right.  Went back and loosened the header up then bolted the muffler in place and went back to the header.  Everything fits now (just barely).

Gotta say that I'm really pleased with it now, though I still wouldn't mind if the rear of the exhaust tucked in a bit closer.  I'm not dragging ground anymore and that's a good thing.  Though with as bad as the original was...

If anyone is thinking about going this route-  I switch my vote to "recommended".

So, what do you think about the quality of the chrome/welds/etc?  How does it sound, and does the bike seem to run better/worse?

Also, how much was it to ship to the US?

Just a quick note since I'm getting ready to leave for the Baltimore Kinetic Sculpture Race.

The chrome looks to be pretty good, and everything is very solid.  I don't really know how to rate the welds, but where they show they're smooth and even (but not ground flush).  At the 4-1 manifold, they're a bit rougher, but maybe that's cause they needed to fill in more space.  I can try to do a few more close up pictures later, if there's interest.

They include split collars (which I didn't end up using- too flimsy) and a stop for your kickstand.  I like the system since it tucks up nice and tight underneath and doesn't require a hanger on the rear like the Kerker seems to.  And it's a pretty quiet system, especially compared to what I had before.

It was just under $600 shipped to my door, which felt a bit pricey but I treated myself.

Glad to hear u got it on the bike finally...

Cursed1 removed his stock baffle and just kept the actual plate itself (that has had 4 large holes added to it).
The bike sounds tough, but keeps that raspy noise to a minimum..

Out of curiosity, how would one go about removing the baffle on these?
