thanks to hondaman, I've got my bike not only running, but moving as well. after a winter rebuild, few things could be more frustrating than to have a bike that's running, but not moving. after tearing down the clutch again, I found the problem, four misplaced washers that were screwing up the return rates on my clutch springs. I checked an exploded view of this clutch (thanks csml) and I discovered that the four washers I had weren't part of the set up at all. with them removed and bolts torqued to specs, she not only runs, but rolls as well, although next I have to go in and tighten head nuts again, lots of white smoke from the left side exhaust and an oily #1 plug.
elated although smoking like something created by professor fate, I was ready to take an unlicensed spin around the drive of my house, the first movement not related to the flintstones since last july... I pull in the clutch lever, and shift into first, then, nothing! just like its supposed to work...engine running, bike in gear, not moving, I slowly begin to release the clutch lever and... she rolls forward, like she's supposed to. elated, I squeeze the clutch in again and... snap! broken clutch cable...
damn.
