is there a.....convertable cafe seat???
« on: May 06, 2007, 08:07:14 PM »
hello all,
im looking to see if there is such a thing as a convertable???? style cafe seat.  i love the cafe look and want to go that direction on my bike. but, i would also like to carry a passenger sometimes.  i beleive i saw something like this on a new triumph.   seat has a cover on the back that makes it look like a cafe style seat but is removable to have space for a passenger. dont have much spare time to build up something so was hoping there was somethng like this availabe?
But thence came the Great Schism, when the two like tribes diverged, and the Bobbers did take the Road to Cruiserdom and the Cafe Racers did ride to Sportbikedom and they did pollute the lands along their paths with their abominable spawn of Choppers, Stuntaz and like manner of unholy douchebaggery

Ed,

What you are referring to is a seat cowl as seen on the Triumph Thruxton (Cafe Bonneville).  I don't know of any manufacturers that have this as an option.  However, I have seen Corbin Seats made for Nortons and Triumphs that have been reconfigured to fit our SOHC's w/o too much trouble - but unfortunately I don't have any info further than that.  You then might be able to reconfigure the Thruxton seat and cowl to fit your bike.

Let us know how you make out, and provide many pictures!

Easyiest way to do this is just to keep the stocker and switch back and forth as needed. I used to do the same on an old BMW years ago. building a new seat and cowl, while feasable, just doesnt make a whole lot of sense when keeping two seats on hand is so easy.

I went into the corbin site a bit "Their web site HATES Macs on old browsers!"

I did find this however.  I like the idea, I have one of Carpys 1st 2 up cafe seats.  It is nice for doubling friends, kids, the wife etc. but there is some style lost in the utilitarian necessity of it.

I found this set up for a 79-82,.  Has any one ever asked them about a custom flip seat for the older models?
These are kind of cool I think for the guy who loves his ride, but doesn't want to spend 3 weeks spraying foam all over the yard, side walk or basement shop to come up with something clean and functional.

Some one here must be interested enough at this point to go through the steps to get a cost?  Perhaps if they realized they might sell a couple of hundred of them they might tale an interest.

OK this was a bit of work...........copy paste/ upload/download  wise ;D

Cheapest option would be, of course, to make your own out of Fiberglass. But, like you said, it would take a little bit of time to make one up.

Ed,

What you are referring to is a seat cowl as seen on the Triumph Thruxton (Cafe Bonneville).

The Ducati Monster also has the same thing.

Seaweb,

I tried to deal with Corbin about re-issuing their molds for the SOHC seatpans - they used to make them, and they still have the molds.  The response I got back from them was absolute jibberish - literally.  They had no idea what I was talking about, and I guarantee I was very clear!  I have a three of their seats and I really like them for comfort and looks, and told them so.  I even went so far as to include pictures of a '76 F with a modded up Gunslinger originally meant for a Norton, but they did not react to it at all.  I wish I had kept the weird correspondence I received from them.

I was going to attempt to call them at some point in time and offer to send in a seatpan and a link to this site so that they could judge for themselves what the demand for thier product could potentially be from all of us here.  But I have not had the chance to do so yet.

There is a shop here in town (Albany Oregon of all places) who makes custom seats and looking through some pictures of his work I did notice a  cafe style seat.  I don't know what he charges and I would like to see what his shop is capable of but I don't really have the funds for a custom seat at this time so there is no sense in torturing myself...  :'( .  He does have a website though and I thought I would pass it along.
