centrifugal clutches, any good resources?
« on: May 06, 2007, 07:42:42 AM »
I am having some problems with the clutch on my scooter.  Does anybody know of any good websites that I can go to that could help me with my problems.  If there is anybody here that could here is what is happening.  My scooter only has 1200 miles on it so its pretty new.  It doesnt seem to have much torque.  It takes so long for it to get to 35mph and when it gets there it takes off and I can get it up to 65.  It seems like something isnt engaging right.

Unless you have the mechanical aptitude to play around with weights and pulleys and belt tensions I would find a local scooter mechanic and get advice direct. If the scooter is that new and this problem is new in coming (not been happening all the time) it sounds like a set-up scenario.

What kind of scooter?

High RPM and no/little movement is a symptom of a centrifugal clutch not engaging.

Is it that what you are experiencing ?

I'd be surprised if Honda didn't have it.

Hi
The part is called a variator i seem to to recall  i had  a HONDA PANTHEION 125 a two stroke  scooter and very good it was to
i think you need to get the scooter magazines they list lots of go faster bits most made in Italy that will improve the transmission.
BUT be warned you need special tools and i would not recommend taking one to bits leave it to a good scooter specialist with first
hand knowledge of your bike and the mods that can be fitted .

Don't know about that bike specifically but I do have experience of automatic clutches
If its been used at low speeds and moderatly high rpm  (people do hold them on the brake causing clutches to slip) it may have some wear.
If it has car oil , the friction modifiers may be causing clutch slip until it fully locks up.
Do an oil change and make sure you use the correct oil and the correct quantity

I think the rpms are fine, I am thinking that one side of the clutch isnt engaging.

That should be an easy fix. check if that half can pivot freely.
If it is a dry clutch check if it is not poluted with oil or other dirt.
