The 1000's.
« on: May 06, 2007, 09:07:59 AM »
I like to be able to reflect on the rides I've had on the various motorcycles I've owned over the years, and because I keep a daily diary (since 1982) I can flip back through the pages and see what was what on a particular day.

That's a bit too anal for most people, and I confess that it is a bit of a job to find a particular entry. So as well as that I keep a log of what I call the '1000's'. Every time the odo turns over 1000 (which is, of course, kms up here) I make a note and keep a record. That way I can have a snapsot of how the riding season went. Also helps get the grey matter moving to try and remember what I was actually doing that day.

As an example here's the '1000's' for a 1999 KLR650 I had for a short while:

2000

October 2      19300   End of the season
September 25   18000   Monashee summit, Highway 6
September 21   17000   Spiral Tunnels, Highway 1
September 18   16000   Canoe, Highway 1
September 8   15000   Oyama, Highway 97
August 6      14000   Nelson, Hwy 3a (Ridden by Don.C)
July 21      13000   Vernon, Highway 97
June 22      12000   Monte Lake, Highway 97
June 19      11000   North of Kamloops, Highway 5
June 17 (2pm)   10000   New Norway, Highway 21, Alberta
June 17 (2am)   9000   David Thompson Resort (AB 2000), Alberta
June 15      8000   Dead Mans Flats, Highway 1, Alberta
June 9      7000   West of Summerland (Kettle Valley Railway gravel road)
June 6      6000   Barnhartvale Road/Highway 97
June 1      5300   Bought privately, Bridge Lake.

I'm a sorry fellow, aren't I?

Hey Nick, that's a neat idea. Only problem is I'd lose my journal. ;)

I figured that doing 100's might be a little too obsessive, but knew that I wanted to keep a record, so 1000's was it. How did I think of it...? Most of my rides are long ones so I get a lot of time to think, not being a fan of aural distractions like music in the ears.

I scribble the info on whatever paper is with me on the ride, then transfer it to a log on the computer. The KLR was the second 'bike I did this with, having started with my R1100RS BM in '98. It's one of those things I do as part of the whole 2-wheeled experience.

I am sorry fellow, aren't I?

I don't think so.  Journals are an excellent way to order thoughts and keep perspective.  Now if only I had the discipline to keep one. ;D

It was the Alberta 2000 Rally. I figure that any well maintained bike is capable of endurance stuff, so I entered the KLR (which as you know is a dual purpose machine). This long distance stuff is all about maintaining the average, not just going balls out as fast as you can. So with good roads and light traffic (it was through the night) it was straight forward to maintain the average.

FWIW I finished the Rally with 2100+kms in 25 hours.

The overall 'no-holds-barred-don't-care-about-getting-busted' winner did 3500+kms on his ST1100.

Also FWIW I rode Sophie down from Fort St.John to Kamloops last Labour day, a distance of exactly 1000km, in 11 hours.

DOn't forget...that's a 1000k.....roughly 600miles in 12hrs.

Instead of a journal, since it is 2007...ever think of getting one of them little helmet cams?? Or even a cell phone camera??  A hand written journal just seems...well, so old school ;D
A good bike mechanic only needs two tools, WD40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move, but should, use the WD40. If it does move but shouldn't use the duct tape.

Good idea. Except then the time it would take to collate and review the footage of video would be better spent riding even more. I like the idea of a picture, though, as long as you remember to label it with the location where it was taken.
