repair for stirpped clutch cable mount
« on: May 06, 2007, 08:49:41 AM »
the handlebar mount for my clutch cable, the aluminium part that is the lower half of the handlebar pod, is stripped. at present I have to tighen the two piece adjuster nuts all the way down just to contact any good threads. would alumalloy (sp?) work here?

could I fill the opening and re-tap it?

Aluminoy may do the trick, but the heat may ruin the finish. You can get a slightly larger screw and retap it. You can use JB Weld also, just silicone the screw first so it will release. Re Tapping may be you best bet.

If you're willing to refinish the shell, gently heat the threaded area then crimp it down slightly so you can drill and retap to stock size.
don't have to close it up a huge amount. saw cut through the slot will open that back up to allow the cable to pass through when finished tapping..

you -may- not need to heat it up, the metal may be malleable enough while cool to bend the slight amount needed.
