way off topic.... advantage vs frontline for pets
« on: May 07, 2007, 07:49:48 AM »
He my dog has fleas...... I've used advantage & frontline in the past - one works better than the other...can't remember which.
Any ideas ?    Also - do you think there is any difference in the flea medications for cats & dogs than just dosage.

Well, off to the yard for a flea bath till I get the drops.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

I tried Frontline on my last dog and it proved to be completely ineffective against ticks which is a huge problem around here. I switched to a collar which seemed a little better. He's gone now but I'm trying Advantix on the new dog. So far it's working but tick season isn't in full assault mode yet so I'm reserving judgement on it. Neither dog has ever had fleas so all three products seem to work for them.

As far as I know dog and cat medications are formulated differently because of the physiology of the animals. There are clear warnings about using the dog meds on a cat.

Ill put my vote in for frontline. It does a great job on our three muts in town. Now when we take em to grandmas in the country they might get a few but theyll die if they attach. Sure thought all this extra ice and snow were finally gonna kill off some of these pests but already they seem thicker than hell...

We use Frontline on my two dogs.  At a checkup in Jan. the vet told us that our one dog had lyme's disease.  It works good for fleas, but ticks.... you make the call.

The little one has the lyme's - he is Sam

Sparty - Really sorry to hear Sam has Lymes, the four here send him friendly nuzzles.

Frontline line has always been our choice But we only use it when they actually get fleas which is very rare these days because we put a chopped up clove of garlic in their food once a week and apple cider vinegar once a month. This is supposed to be detectable in their blood to the fleas that hate the taste of it.
The dogs have been flea-free since we started doing this about three years ago, and there has only been one tick in that time.

I try to avoid using the chemical treatments as much as possible because they contain alot of carcinogens.

My bike can be repaired.

Sam, Do pm me when you're down here it would be great to meet up :)

Bad breath isn't a problem as they only have garlic once a week and they have a couple of raw chicken wings every so often to keep their teeth clean. ;D

Daniel, Thanks for the heads up about brewers yeast, I didn't know about that one. :)

If anyone wants to know more about feeding their dogs an alternative diet and preventative feeding try doing an internet search on BARF (biologically appropriate raw food) or check out http://www.barfworld.com/.
Although we tried doing the full barf diet for a while and the dogs loved it it was a lot of work.

I've been using Frontline Plus on my dogs for about 10 years now. Ticks are a non-problem. I wish they made
a version for people, though. I have more problems with ticks than the dogs do! Fleas have never been a problem
around here, not even for me!
