Rattle Can over Chrome
« on: May 07, 2007, 06:45:03 PM »
Anyone had success with rattle painting chrome.

The 185 project has a "engine protect/hwy bar" set up that came with it but the chrome is to far gone to clean, and I'm not paying for re-chroming on this thing.  I'd like to put it on as it will be "new" riders using the bike.

Get it bead blasted to pit the chrome well and paint should stick to it.  Won't take any major hits but should stand up to washing.

I recently painted a set of mildly rusty exhaust pipes using 00 steel wool and 1 can of paint.  I scuffed the faded chrome surface until it looked like brushed aluminum, cleaned it off and put down two light coats.  About ten minutes after the second one I put down a slightly heavier coat and built off of it until it was solid.

Here are the before and after:

1. give a good sanding with a heavy grit sandpaper (80 grit)
2. Go over the entire thing with a scotch brite pad to smooth things out alittle
3. clean to insure their is no oil/dust/crap
4. spray with dupli-color engine enamel (crap is like powdercoating in a can)

That was going to be my paint for the job.  Would you want to prime it 1st?
