Which Clearcoat?
« on: May 08, 2007, 04:29:27 PM »
I just paid for a tank for my 1978 750K off of ebay. Haven't seen it yet, but looks the black may be good, but the clearcoat flaking.
Can I sand the old clearcoat, and spray anew?
If so, does onybody know if the original clearcoat was enamel, or lacquer?

Thanks

To check if paint is lacquer or not, pour lacquer onto a rag and gentle touch a spot not visible when mounted.  If its lacquer itll start to smear, if its acrylic or other than itll stay firm.  Lacquer never cures out.  Stock should be an enamel base of some sort.  I wouldnt recommend clearing over it.  Clearcoat is damn expensive depending on brand and so Id recommend painting and than reclearing!
