Hood / bonnet ornaments
« on: May 08, 2007, 04:36:21 PM »
The art in hood ornaments has been in steady decline - this is from a 1936 Cadillac. Beautiful :)  Anyone else have favourites?

Not the best picture, but it's vintage and on ebay.  I'll be back with the link. ;)

There are lots of cool/beautiful Art Deco and later into the 50's hood ornaments. This one is pretty nice. It's not great but very 50's/60's...and I happen to have it sitting around...along with a Mack bulldog. It's from an Oldsmobile...

           Hey Rocking-M,
Haven't found an actual nice looking hood ornament. I did find a 50's "Ash Tray" w/ the Mack Bull Dog ornament on it. Check it out. ;) 8)

I think ornaments are being dropped mainly cause you have little punks that like to rip them off. The female ones would get protested off of cars by women who cant get laid!

Anything by Lalique is pretty spectacular.  Early Packard goose was really pretty.  Possibly my 2 favorites is the early '50s Dodge ram with horns that are away from the head, and early Pontiac indian heads.
I have a modest collection of ornaments including Gordon's Nash up there.  The only good-looking part of the car.

Rene Lalique 1860-1945, designer of glass, jewellry. and automotive ornaments. Thanks UE, new stuff to me :)   A pic of his work from   http://northstargallery.com/cars/sensualilty.htm  which puts these objects into the framework of Western Art.  Pics of some other ornaments he created are here- http://www.djltrading.com/car_mascots/

Mercedes was probably the one who remained using the hood ornament for longer. It was stolen very often, so they had to come up with a detachable design.

I guess the ornaments are in decline because they wouldn't pass the DOT, as they can be dangerous to the pedestrian in case of accident. The Mercedes star folds to the back and can be detached, but most of the people never put it on as it is a pain in the back. I remember there was an aftermarket grill in which the ornament could be raised and hidden electrically, at the touch of a button.

The one that I've always liked for what it means to me as an spaniard is the Hispano-Suiza ornament.

When I was in Frisco, walking and sightseeing, after visiting the Colt tower and walking down to the financial district I saw a Rolls-Royce, parked on the street!! It was almost dusk, never ever had I been so close to one, so...................... I touched it and continued my stroll.
