Original type of clearcoat/paint for Honda CB360 gas tank?
« on: April 05, 2011, 07:23:53 PM »
I recently stripped all the paint from a CB360 tank, but left two stripes running down the middle (stripes are the original paint color).  I'd like to clear coat the tank and have the bare metal plus these stripes left showing.  My plan is to clear coat the whole tank to prevent the bare metal from rusting but I'm not sure whether to use an enamel clear coat or lacquer.  I have heard using one over the other can cause the clear coat to peel.  So I'm trying to use whatever type of paint/clearcoat the original tank had to clearcoat the bare metal plus strips.  Does anyone know what type of paint these older Honda used?  Please let me know if that made any sense, haha.  Thanks!

Bump, anyone know what type of clear coat was used on most Honda tanks originally? Enamel or lacquer? Thanks!

They didn't use clear coat. They used a single stage paint that dried shiny.
It wasn't until the mid to late 80's that base coat/clear coat technology was introduced into the market.

I would only use 2K urethane clear coat on your tank. Any other will not stand up to gas spills and UV protection... they will yellow in a short time. Instead, you can buy quart kits that require spray guns and compressed air lines etc or you may even consider SprayMax clear aresol that is 2K clear. The SprayMax can has a large button on the bottom of the can that when pressed, activates the clear inside the can with the activator. This can now will spray 2K clear for 24 hours.

"Kong" has a lot to offer with respect to painting so you may want to PM him too for his advice.
