K7 won't run off of full choke...
« on: May 08, 2007, 03:16:08 AM »
My brother handed me this bike he just got and said, "fix it."  I said, "What do I look like? The CB guy???"

Apparently, he thinks so.  But little does he know, I certainly am not!

I pulled the carbs, and cleaned and disassembled them.  I didn't take them off the rack as I didn't want to screw up the sync to badly.

One thing I noticed...  There is a tube going to the number 2 cylinder, about 1/4" ID, that is plugged with a screw.  Is this part of the emmissions control?  The bike has an F1 gastank so I didn't see anywhere on the gastank for it to go. any ideas?

I cleaned them as I usually would. Set the slow idle jets at 1.5 turns.  I will not be putting the K&N pods back on, I will be putting on an airbox.

This thing will not run unless full choke is on.  It will sometimes start and idle without the choke, but as soon as I crack the throttle the tiniests bit, it stalls.  It will do the same thing unless I have it on full choke.

Should I ditch these carbs?  Should i get a set of earlier carbs?  What is wrong/What am I doing wrong?

I say pull off the carbs and go through them again. Sounds like you still have fuel pathways plugged up somewhere. Also, bench sync them before you put them back on. And check your timing to make sure it is one, and double check the advancer moves freely.

Hope this helps

Are you running the bike without any filters attached to the carbs?  If so, this will lean out the mixture requiring the use of the choke to compensate.  This usually wouldn't make too much of a difference if it has been jetted to run with pod filters, but if it hasn't and it's still stock jetted, the carbs need the airbox to restrict the airflow some.

it should run with no airbox/filters at low rpm, also check for an air leak.

The K7 has both an accelerator pump system that squirts gas into the runners upon throttle twist, and pressed in idle jets with very small orfices.

The lack of idle without choke indicates a need to run off the mains as the idle jets are plugged.

The lack of response to throttle twist is an indication the accel pump isn't happy.

On this year carb, does the jet screw into the jet holder/emulsion tube just like older K series bikes?

Also, should I be able to see through the pilot jet?  I know it is a tiny hole, but i dont know if I should go sticking wire into it to clean it out.  If I do, what kind of wire should I use?  Is it like one strand of copper speaker cable wire?  Like the center conductor of coax cable tv wire?  RG-6? RG-59?  Cat 5?

Finally, how can I test the accelerator pump?
