Dabnabbit! Paint failure.
« on: May 10, 2007, 03:27:43 PM »
I just love this bike!

Was out of town a couple of weeks and left full tank of fuel in bike. Garage gets real warm from sun on door... fuel expanded in tank and forced it's way out the cap and creeped into basecoat boundry between epoxy primer and clearcoat.

Lesson learned: Tape no more than 1/2 up filler neck for colorcoat and RETAPE above that mark for clearcoat. Basecoat is real vunerable to fuel so allowing an exposed edge is bad news.

I'm waitng until winter to repair. Meanwhile, I'm going to McGiver a tank pad mod to cover the pain.

That sucks Staph!  But she's still a beauty!  Thanks for the heads up on a potential problem when painting.

Don't worry, I did the same thing this past fall. I painted my KZ400 tank all the way to the top and once the gas vapors worked its way between the paint, it started to peel like crazy.

I did the same remedy you did. Just painted halfway up and left the other half bare.

I guess I'm just a stubborn old fart. I still use Acrylic enamel with hardner.

Never had any problems with that. And it's cheaper.
