Riding without the air box

Is it really bad to do? I ask because I want to buy a '73 750 and ride it back home ( about a 1 1/2 hour drive ) It doesn't appear to have an airbox in the picture but the guy claims in the ad that it runs great. I could pull the airbox off of my bike and take it down with me but it's a pain in the ass. Also, who knows how long this guy's been riding without one so what's one more hour or so.

does it have any filters on it?

if not, i'd be worried about sucking in some dirt (i know a few of you run without filters, but damn... on the street!?)

Nope, no filters, no nothing. Just a big open space behind the carbs.

I went w/o filters for a couple o' days when I first got mine.  I did put some fine brass screen over the intakes, however, and held it on w/ the plastic velocity stacks (I don't know what else to call those) out of a stock airbox.  Didn't seem to hurt anything but probably not the best idea I've ever had.

wire ties and some pantyhose material will work in a pinch.

Slim you also got to consider it is going to be very very lean if it is not jetted to run the way it is without  filters even putting pods on require rejetting be carefull maybe just in a pinch run with chock patialy on you dont want to burn up a piston or two or four you get my point good luck have fun seven fifty four ever Craig in Maine

This sounds like the best answer, just to get it home.  I'd be more worried about the bike breaking down on a 1.5 hour trip, regardless of what the PO said.

If the previous owner has been running it that way, any damage has already been done. A thin coat of grease on the carb lips to trap a smidgen of dust, and a little choke on the ride home. ( I live on a gravel road and smear a coat of grease in my airbox, any dust to stick to the grease don't even get to the filter.)
