Need some help with a GL500 Silverwing. Experts Needed!
« on: May 25, 2007, 10:56:56 AM »
As some as you know, the Honda GL500 Silverwing Interstates had an ill effect of poorly made water pump mechanical seals that required to be pressed in.

Well, I was wondering. After taking the cover off and getting a new seal pressed in, I noticed some rubber goop that is still on the cam shaft. Where the rubber of the seal rides on.

What could I use to remove this?? I've already used de-greasers....... So my next step is to use a fine brass wheel on my dremel.

Is this okay?

I can supply detailed pictures if needed.

Thanks for the help,

LL

Paint stripper might work...with appropriate care. I wouldn't have at sensitive areas with anything mechanical. Apart for potential damage to the item you might not see where all the detritus goes.

I never thought of that ::) ::) Dang it!

I'll try a very tiny area first.

Anybody else have any other suggestions?

Thanks for the help

Hers one for you,
The seal isnt what usually leaks!!!

Replace the thick copper washer under the impeller dome nut, you will probably have to get the Honda part as its an odd size.

Dont ask me how i know this I actually used to do the cam chain mod INSIDE the Honda warrantee time!!!

Wow!!!! That might have been it. Ah ??? >:( >:(

So, now that I replaced all of it, what would you use to clean this leftover rubber goop that is on the cam end??

Yeah, my cam has already been modded, via Honda.

Thank you for the help

I did quite a few of the cam chain mods as well, from the original  'place two punch marks in front of engine number on left crankcase side' to the last 'fully automatic' ones which weren't ::)
I got it down to about 1.5 hrs eventually (did a lot I think  ;))
Haven't seen inside one for about 20 yrs though (aah, the 'good old days  ::))
That washer was almost always squashed by the nut and could prevent the impeller tightening on shaft correctly ( to pre-load seal)
I seem to remember the hardest part was removing generator rotor to get to chain tensioner, until 'we' got a 50 ton hydraulic puller ;D ;D

Never had a problem getting the rotor off, just used the 4 leg (each leg had a different thread) honda tool and a soft hammer, that copper washer deforms into the"splined" hole inside the impeller whilst the other side is up against the flat nut so it sealed water from going down the shaft, if you are lucky enough to get it back on exactly the same it donr seal
