New pony in my stable - Which to tour, and which to cafe???
« on: November 17, 2007, 11:32:07 AM »
This week, I picked this up from an old school forum member Howard Allen.

It's a strong runner with 55K miles on it.  It comes with an additional (the original engine), with 15K on it.   The original was pulled when the head gasket started leaking oil by, and Howard put in the K4 engine that you see in the picture.  Now both engines need a top end gasket kit on them.

Here's my 78 750F that I put 2500 miles on this riding season.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Originally I was looking for a second bike to customize, caffinate, and personalize to my taste.  When Howard told me he would sell me his 76 750K for $200 I jumped on it thinking I would modify it.
Howard started talking sensibly, as he usually does, and recommended customizing my 78 F.
His reasoning seems pretty sound, and I'm leaning that way now.  But because we're so good at debating the nuances of the SOHC world, and this is a pretty opinionated group.  I thought I would offer my dilemma up for comment.
My reason to custom/cafe the K is that I love spoked wheels, and the exhaust (though these pipes are serviceable they're not great).
My reason to custom/cafe the F is that it runs like a bat out of hell and stops great too.
What say you?
You can't make too much popcorn, but you can definately eat too much popcorn.
 Don't think there can be a clear decision with so many subjective considerations, but if they were mine I would cafe the F (with its better power, brakes and tank) and restore the K to its original configuration.  I would also sell the hard bags to upperlake04 to help generate some cash to do it with.
Don't sell them to upperlake04!  Sell them to jtb (but only if he gets the extra holes in his tank closed up)
Do the F.  Its already sportier and would require less money/work to cafe.  Also, the K is already set up to tour, why not keep it that way?
Ben,
I agree with mkramer - the F will a good candidate for a cafe bike (and more power!)...the K6 was made for touring -put some euro bars on it ($15) and you`ll be good to go anywhere.
Good luck and keep us posted.
cheers
Andy
