Saw this one a few days ago when it first hit the news. It is sad when people are so blinded by something so simple as food and utterly ignore ALL medical information regarding care of infants. You really have to feel sorry for the child. Just imagine what it must have been feeling and thinking all the while it was starving. :'(

Hmmm. I'm with you guys. But it's just another example of parents assuming their 'right' to be 'responsible' for their child, no matter what. The other common scenario is the JW belief of not allowing blood transfusions. Or the mutilation of a girls privates, by her parents, in some cultures because women are not supposed to experience pleasure.

They do have the right to be responsible for their child. And they have the right to be punished, severely, for such irresponsible behaviour.

It came to a head recently here when a gal gave birth to sextuplets. I believe two died at birth and at least one of the survivors was critically ill and needed a transfusion. The parents refused due to religious belief so the doctors sought, and gained, legal ward of court for the necessary time to treat the baby, who survived.

I see the argument that parents should be allowed to adhere to their beliefs, but in this case it could be possibly said that nature was not allowed to run its course in the first instance. She probably had fertility treatments to have been able to conceive in the first place and end up with six babies, which is itself not 'natural'.

I really struggle with people who do these types of things to their children.  In this case, I got really P.O'd when these parents valued being vegans over the welfare and health of their baby.  Talk about selfish, misplaced priorities.

BREASTMILK... HELLO..?? IS ANYONE IN THAT SKULL?

I with you there.  I expect this may have been basis for incarceration.

However, if they were unable to recognize nutritional needs for the infant, they were probably unable to identify nutritional needs for the mother, as well.  There may have been no or deficient breastmilk.

While an awful state of afairs, one has to wonder if nature hasn't prevailed in this matter.  Can you imagine the developmental deficiencies the poor kid would have had, if it had survived the parental ordeal?  Hard to imagine any standard of normalcy either mental or physical.

Perhaps the child's cry for mercy was answered after all.

Pretty sad. :( :'(

Very true, and almost said something to the same effect, but was afraid I'd be lambasted for pointing out Darwinism due to the awful circumstances.

I propose that Vegans and Omnivores (carnivores in my case) can live together in harmony, as they do in the animal kingdom.  We Omnivores (or carnivores) shall simply eat the Vegans (Herbivores) and all will be right with the world.

Or as Red Forman once said on an episode of 'That '70s Show', looking down at a plate of salad or rice or somesuch...

If you have kids then you know when somethings wrong.  There has got to be some element here we don't know about.  With your first kid you panic over the stupidest things.  I ran my son to the doctor more then once to find out it's nothing that a table spoon of medicine and a nap wont cure.  They knew something was wrong (how couldn't they know?) and I'm willing to bet they didn't want what was wrong to conflict with their beliefs.

Child neglect pisses me off to no end, and they got what they deserved!  He will get to be some nice man's girlfriend and I have a feeling he will be eating meat again.  ;D

oh, he'll be eating a LOT of meat, very soon.....not to mention the fact that they'll be administering beef injections at regular intervals to get him caught up :o

Never have been able to understand the whole "vegan" thing. Do you know what they call primates that don't eat meat? Nothing, because all primates are omnivorous to one degree or another. It's too bad that 4 1/2 million years of eating animal protein has allowed some animals to grow a brain complex enough to decide that eating meat is unnecessary for their good health, yet they are just healthy enough to procreate and impose their twisted will on their offspring. I have rarely seen a situation where going all the way to one end of the spectrum of possibilities on any subject was really beneficial. Besides, don't we all have a responsibility to die of cardiac arrest at age 58, before we have a chance to consume too much more than our fair share of resources? How can we do that if all we eat are sprouts and twigs? I'd continue, but I smell bacon... ;D
