CB550 Cafe seat, will the battery fit under this seat?
« on: May 11, 2007, 02:17:25 PM »
I want to go with the naked look and I talked with the guys at Glass from the Past.  They seem to think this would be the seat.  I am hoping to get some feedback from you guys before I have them ship it.

Thanks!

I don't know about your CB550, but it would be too narrow for my '70 CB750 K1 frame. That seat is 7.5" wide at the front, and my frame is 8" wide at the back of the tank.

As I understand, the only concern is the space under the hump.  What about you guys that have gone with the naked look, did you make your seat or buy it?

BTW Jinx, did you get those coils?

Nope, nothing yet. I'm keeping my eye out though.

That's funny they told you that, because they told me that it would not fit my 550 frame. My 76 550k is wider at the front than that seat allows (I think we are at about 9" wide at the front of the seat).   That is not to say that you can't make it work, just that it won't be able to fit around the frame.  You could build a bracket to make it work, I did not want to bother, and still looking for a seat pan to use and make my my own.

If you do go this route (I think others here have) post pics of how you mounted it.

I picked up a smaller battery off ebay - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=140113496606&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=004

Its just about the same size as the Odyssey PC310 and looks to be a little stronger.  I'll be mounting mine on its side, under the seat with the rest of the electronic bits (R/R, fuse box and starter relay).

 :-[ Me too.

I have a ton of other things going on.  I figure if I am going to take the time to make a brace and bracket, I might as well make the whole dam thing.  I like the one that is being made out of an old HD tank.  I would actually prefer a metal hump.  I was hoping my lazy side could be catered to.

I though I saw one somewhere that was just a bolt on a go job.  It even had room for the battery, but I can find it anywhere.  Anyone know what I am talking about?  (They never know what I am talking about  :D)

Benjie's Cafe Racer has bolt on seats for the 550...see Doug_ID's bike.  From what I hear, it is well worth the money ($350).

BTW, I think that cafe cowl made from the HD tank is listed in the parts for sale section.

       Hey cleveland,

Is this the one you're talking about? StevieMac used the rear portion of a Sportster gas tank for the hump on his seat and all the electrics, including the battery, are in there. ;)

                                                        Later on, Bill :) ;)

           Opps :-[  Here's the picture. ::)

Those look nice.  Will either of the top two hold a battery?

It's been a long day, and I'm the type of guy that will look for the remote for 15 minutes before finding it sitting in the middle of the coffee table.  :-[  That being said, I couldn't find it.  ???

       Hey cleveland,

Is this the one you're talking about?

No it wasn't, but that look AWESOME!!!

9 inches at the front?  My cb550 frame is only about 7.5 inches at the front and abut 9.5 in the rear at the widest point.
