a new 550?
« on: May 11, 2007, 08:02:09 PM »
Well, got a line on a '79 CB550 from a guy my friend knows, going to look at it Monday.  Supposedly just needs hot battery and a muffler.  I'm thinking maybe a chopper project? ;D :-\ Ok, 550 guys, I'm ready.....ATTACK!

UPDATE:  After having seen and purchased this bike, chopping is definitely no longer an option!

Did they make a 550 in '79? Is it a left-over '78? Not that it makes one whit of difference.

That's what I was just about to ask, I was looking at Z1 and CRC 2 out of curiosity to check parts availability and found no mention of a '79 550.  I bet it's a '78.  Got the info from a friend who talked to a guy.....you know.

Okay, looked at and purchased the 550 today.  It is a '78.  It's a 550K, with just over 11,000 miles on it.  This bike is pristine!  Mufflers are shot, and it is running seriously rich (guy I got it from rebuilt carbs, I assume the floats are incorrect since one of the carbs is puking fuel constantly).  But wow!  It rides pretty good, feels way different than my 750.  I actually feel a bit more comfortable on my 750, but that's probably because I'm used to it.  Pics tomorrow!

Year of first registration and Model Year can sometimes be a few years apart (as you've found out).  Seems to happen more often in the UK than in the states, but the exact model is determined by the VIN, regardless of the registration date.

Hey, 750, the title is supposed to be clear.  Hasn't been tagged since 1983 :o  Meeting the PO to transfer title Friday, hope it goes well.....

I paid $450

Obviously, I've decided against chopping this one!

Thanks, all!  Outlaw, I'm looking for something to replace those miserable pipes as we speak, but it looks like it's gonna be harder than it was to get exhaust for my 750.(mainly because I DID get exhaust for my 750 and am now pretty close to tapped out on bike money) ::) always something ;)

I've got a spare set of 1978 550k pipes. I just bought some, remember? Problem is, I can't decide whether to keep my pipes (much prettier), or install the new ones (less rot).

Either pair would be lightyears ahead of the ones on that machine. What did he do to them that the rest of the bike looks great but the pipes are literally falling apart?

I'm not that serious about he pipes, I might add. I'm figuring I'll keep the prettier ones on the machine until the rust blows through (it's just on the bottom, and the rust itself is currently plugging the hole) and the bike gets a bit loud. Then I'll swap. It may take a few years.
If life were fair, I'd be dead.

Dunno how it turned out that way, twist.  I was wondering myself how the exhaust could be so bad while the rest was nearly spotless.   ???
