Greetings from Houston, Tx

I'm not sure buying a bike in an unlit garage at night from a friend of a friend is always a good idea.

The friend of a friend's friend laid the bike down in 1989 and never got back on it. Everything that WAS chrome either needs to be replaced or painted. My budget will be the determining factor.

The last time I owned a bike was in the early 80's, a v45 Sabre - and before that, a dohc CB750, a cb650, cb550, '74Kaw 900, cb350-Four, and a cb360.

Recently I got a little raise at work - 6 months after my review was scheduled, and they made it retroactive! First thing I did was to get on ebay and start looking.
I found out there is rarely anything near me in the price range I was looking in, so instead of waiting patiently (my wife's suggestion), I bought the '78 750K.

Figured buy the bike ($200.00), fix it up, and still remain within budget (1,000). It still looks plausible.
Really, the only the only good thing about it is that the motor turns over, and seems to have good compression.
Hey, that's a start.

By the way, have you done much 2-up riding? The manual says 360 lbs is the maximum, and with me at 220, the windjammer, and a couple of leather saddlebags full, I figure we will be at the limit.
How critical is it?
How will it affect performance - cruising speed, mileage, etc?

Thanks

Welcome!  As far as loading up the bike, if the spokes are rusted be carefull.  Some one on this forum had his rear wheel colapse on him.

Yeah that would be me....riding down the highway and hearing a "pinging" sound (2-up at the time) - by the time I had travelled from New York to Knoxville, TN I realised what the pinging sound was...the rusty rear wheel spokes snapping off....when we came off the highway and reached the first set of lights the rear wheel collapsed:

"Hey get off the bike"
"why?"
"the rear wheel just collapsed!"

good luck,
Andy

I had a CB750 K8 with a windjammer. Plenty of power even with my ex-wife on the back. I miss the K8 but.......

Thanks guys, I've started cleanin' it up, the pipes are rusted through, as is the tank.
The guy had all the wiring messed up, had a female plug wired in, and a male plug with a jumper for the on-off switch!
Unplug, put the male end in your pocket and away you go!
I got the wiring straightened out, and the starter button, of/off switch, etc all works as they should.

Thanks again, and see you on the forums.

Looks like a project, there, Geezer, but my 750 still looks like one!  I'm just under 1500 bucks on mine including the purchase price, and just found out today that I'm going to need new fork tubes ::)

The area that was covered by the boots or "gaiters" is so badly rusted as to be nearly unrecognizable.  I may hunt eBay, or look for some GL1000 forks, but it'll be a while.

Welcome!
I am a noob here too!  But, if it makes you feel any better, I would have bought it for that $$$.  I just bought my first one last week!  You think bikes in your area are hard to find, C'mon up to Oklahoma.  No, or not many that I can find, bike salvages...I guess I'll start my own...
Post more pics as it comes along.  Are you gonn'a leave it mostly stock?
