Sprocket recommendations(gearing)
« on: May 13, 2007, 06:15:14 PM »
I finally got the funds to get a new chain and sprockets.....Thanks IC  ;D  I already have the chain....a Gold EK 530 MVXZ Quadra-Xring. The wife got to the rest of the money from selling the exhaust before I could get the sprockets ordered so Im gonna put them on a credit card  ::)

Looking for some info as to what gearing to get. I know its (76 750K model) suppose to have a 18 tooth front and a 48 rear and I like the way it pulls now....but not sure if the sprockets have been changed from stock.....yet.

Whats everybody else running? Im looking at the SunStars.

Also.......the chain came with a rivet master link. Is it overkill? I know it will be stonger than a clip style master link.....but I dont have a riveter and that will be another 50+ bucks  ::)

I think you'd probably like a 17/48 in place of your stock 18/48. You'll notice an appreciable difference in the acceleration. Cheapest performance upgrade you can do. You'll probably get 70mph at 5000 rpm. Only minimal difference in rpm at 70mph.

Just to back up what others have said, I'm also going w/ a 17/48 setup on my project.

Yep I have the 17/48 setup and I am glad I did it. very little difference in revs at speed but a noticable accel increase. Certinley worth doing. As to the riveted master link, they came with a clip style link when new so I did the same. My new chain also included a rivet link but I just bought a clip style from the same brand and style (o-ring) and I am pretty confident in it. No doubt the rivet ones are better but like you I just didn't want to buy the tool for somting that is after all overkill. I am sure others will dissagree but thats my .02

18/48 is stock. In the early days the 17/48 was a chain-eater. But with todays chains that sould no longer be a problem.
Mine does not get to top speed in 5th it has top speed in 4th. Maybe a 17/48 will get you to top speed in 5th.
It will for shure accelate better.

Don't mean to hijack, but is it common to replace the front with a higher # of teeth for more suitable road driving?
