80-Gl 1100 Goldwing
« on: May 13, 2007, 06:55:08 PM »
After driving 8 Hours yesterday I now have an 80-GL1100 Goldwing sitting in my driveway. Along side my 79-CB650 The PO had bought it last year and after putting close to 3000 into it. Ran off the road and over a bolder taking off about an inch of the back engine housing and destroying the Timing chain (?) Housing as well. He said it did not do any more damage but after looking it over it can be seen that it flipped over onto its back and pushed the trunk and housing down (easily fixed). Because I will be heading over seas to Singapore next month for 3-4 months I am going to get it ready during my next time home for spring next year. And I was able to get an 1100 re-built engine (if I need it) I have made up my mind to strip it down to the frame and re build it. From the ground up. I only paid 600 CDN. For it) but I don’t really know were to start. Are there any sites like this one that I can go to get the quality of answers that are here. And if anyone has any pointers I am willing to read then ..
Thanks

Now that is a bike. Great pictures . I don't think i could convince my wife to make our bike like that . we ride together a lot and she likes to vegetate on the back when we ride. I have caught her sleeping back there a few times when we have the sleeping bags on the saddles of the CB650 and she is Pinned into her seat and cant fall over lol. all she really needs now is one of those DVDs screens on my back and she would be at home back there.  ;D

I have allready told my wife the 650 is going to lose ALL the extra plastic and Be put back to a bike i can ride not drive . (bloody top heavy and is a large sail in the wind) i got my licence back in 1975 and i may be close to 50 but i still enjoy testing the throddle once in a while  ;D.

Now for a carb. question.  with the Goldwing being a project bike for the winter. i have started to take it down to the frame allready, Most of the parts that need polishing and re-cromed are in my spare bedroom allready (this should keep the kids away ,i hope. lol)
is there a way to protect the carbs while i am polishing them. should i leave some gas in them or take them apart and Polish them in pieces? I just dont want any rubber (if there is any in them ) to crack.

If its going to be stood for a while you will need carb kits anyway, as to the 1100, not sure how easy a fit that is as the 1100 should be electronic ign wit the 1000 being point plus the generator is different i think (but willing to be proved wrong) Also carbs will be different.

Make sure the slides are very free in the carb tops, they should fall in and out with NO sticky bits.

Both sites are good, with all the sites now open to me . I will never have to talk to the kids again, just read the forms. ;D I am listed there as Sailor NB. I am thinking of getting the carbs registered with Canadian Customs  (saves the BS when i am bringing them home ) and taking them with me to re-build them and polish them on the 4-6 month trip on the Tug.
Thanks again.

Just picked up my AllBalls steering head bearings. I'm going to tackle that some time this week.
