Another brake squeal fix - unscientific +some pics
« on: May 16, 2007, 09:59:31 AM »
I haven't been around here for quite some time as I spent a lot of time on projects other than SOHCs.
However, this winter I finalised the engine rebuild on my 550F at last and this spring I installed a new Borrani rear wheel and a new front wheel with a dual-disc setup.

With predictable results: A bit more braking power and double the squealing  ;D

I did (almost) everything: rebuilt brakes, rebuilt GL1000 m/c, stainless lines, carefully aligned 2nd brake set, new brake pads with broken edges and an added groove...the brakes were so loud, I couldn't stand using them in city traffic and only used the rear brake.

All that until I came into the first heavy downpour of the season. Predictably, the squealing went away in the wet. What I hadn't anticipated was that the squealing almost is gone now, even though the brakes are completely dry now!  ???

So, for those of you plagued by noisy brakes: Try to get them wet. If you don't ride in rain, try to hose them down and ride afterwards and brake them dry. Maybe it helps. It sure helped me. Never was so happy to ride in rain before.

Cheers, Remi
