i have never installed a seat...
« on: May 15, 2007, 10:56:24 AM »
i want to get a new seat for my 750. i was thinking something along the lines of the universal dunstall style seat that carpy makes. since it is not a direct bolt on like some seats, what is involved in mounting?

If possible use the stock hinges and latch to secure it.  You probably wont be able to attach them directly to the new seat, thats where you have to be creative.  Since the fiberglass style seats are not that strong, you might have to create some kind of support directly under the part your ass will sit on.Think wood or metal sheet/plate for a base pan.  Attach the stock hinge and latch to this base pan.  Then fasten the seat to the wood/metal base pan.  I would recommend using cardboard as a template to transfer the stock mounting positions and finding good locations to fasten the seat....and Alakazam your done!
Good luck!

I just got my dunstall seat from Carpy yeserday, I have a cb750k from 1978 and the way it looks , I think that I have to cut hinges and
lock off the frame and then drill 4 screws from the top of the dunstall thru the frame ...

i actually took an old kitchen cutting board , screwed 2 metal tabs to it . cut off my hinges from the frame , set it on and put 2 screws into the frame . then i mounted the seat to the cutting board . works perfect

when you guys are putting wood/cutting boards or whatever underneath the seat, does it raise the height of the seat and can you see whatever it is that you put undearneath there when its done?

thanks for the replies guys! my bike should be here soon. it will be my first bike and things will start to make much more sense when i can see and touch what you guys are talking about.

on mine the seat hangs over the frame on the sides so you can't see anything , i used a plastic cutting board about half an inch thick and cut it to fit the seat . i didn't want to just lay the seat on the frame because i thought my weight might crack it . i can take some pics if you want .

thanks a lot for the pics. that clears up a lot of things.

so it is just those 2 tabs, with bolts going into the frame, that are holding the seat?

i am planning on keeping a stock seat around to ocasionally put back on, so my girlfriend can ride on the back. but with the hinges cut off can i still do this?

i thought about that too , if i ever need to put someone on the back i'm just going to bunjee the old seat back on , but since the chicks aren't exactly knocking my door down to get at me i don't think it'll be a problem .

maybe use the same method on the stock seat and use the same screws/holes?

ill figure something out. the cafe seat is first priority. maybe ill just have to get a side car! haha she would hate that!
